FJ - F = engine type, J = Jeep

Toyota didn't really make it a secret, just better.

The Willys Overland company, who knew they would be the trend setters one hundred years later.

Who would want to copy the 4Runner design? It’s like a catfish jumping out a yeti cooler. We’re all conditioned to love it because it’s just aggressive ugly and functional in all the right places.

I hated the 5th gen design for so long but then it stayed on the market for even longer. It chipped away at my will like a lop-sided arranged marriage, burning its profile and lines into my subconscious; I can draw it for you blindfolded.

I love my 19 but pre facelift was definitely better looking.

The new 2022 Timberline Ford Explorer is boxier but falls short of the 5th Gen 4runner. Seems like the Toyota designers and engineers prefer the classic suv look and refuse to compromise in spite of competition from other manufacturers. The 4runners old school boxy look is not hard to reproduce yet other manufacturers don't even try because they can't sell a relatively utilitarian off road classic suv and make profit let alone come close to 4runner sales and profit numbers.

Lol. I felt somewhat the same way. I had a 2001 supercharged 3rd gen and really never liked the style of the 4th at all. Then when the 5th came out I wasn’t impressed, but, liked it better than the 4th. It wasn’t until I saw a TRD Pro with the updated front end heritage grille, wheels, etc. that I started taking notice. After 17 1/2 years I let my 3rd gen go for my Pro. It burned into my subconscious and I couldn’t say no.

Great rendition. I think I’ve seen a couple in the L.A. river.

Yeah, the 4th was a real bastard stepchild. Never really inspired me even though I had, and loved, one.

In terms of the fang/teardrop style fog light look on the front facia ( ) [ ] , I can see how that's a valid argument. Other manufactures seemed to have picked up on that design cue and added some rendition to their models. Otherwise, not really.

Same! The 3rd gen is my favorite design. Ignored the 4th. The early 5th gens look great but they really “catfished” us with better-approach-angle refresh.

I have to admit, I hated the heritage grill at first. I thought “No one is going to confuse this for anything else but a T O Y O T A”. But here I am, driving around happy with my heritage grill. Lol

Conditioning is crazy. Makes me wonder how much bigger BMW is going to make their kidney grills before every fanboy jump ship.
