Were you pulled over on the shoulder or were you off the pavement in a ditch (what kind of surface?)

Even the Dunflops got me through stuff deeper than that as long as I was on the pavement/gravel. Off to the side I can move through that no problem with the BFG's.

It was on a paved turnout with a slight incline to the actual shoulder. I found out it was paved when the tow truck driver shoveled the snow out to get the jack under the rear axle. After seeing the asphalt I was really surprised that I got stuck. Before anyone asks I had the center diff locked and even tried 4lo with center locked. I even rocked the 4Runner back and forth with no results. BTW the Revo's had near new thread depth.

Ive been in much deeper stuff that that, and it was iced over too, so the chance of high centering was alot greater.

Thanks for all the input guys! I think I'm either going to go with the BFG KO's or the Firestone Destination M/T's. My job makes it tough because I'm on such a wide variety of terrain. I definately want to get something with a stronger side wall. Some of the newer sites I work at they started using these bigger rocks (instead of gravel) on the access roads. Driving over them you can hear them begging to shred a tire.

I have to say I was more impressed with the Revo's on the 4Runner then on the Titan. But like Falls said, trucks are a lot more rear end happy no matter what the tire is.

The Cross Terrains are a GREAT tire, but I definately need more aggressive then that. My buddy runs them on his X-Terra and loves them, but again he's off-road maybe 1% of his time, if that.

Toyota could solve all my problems if they would just come out with the "Toyota 4Runner JBE" (=James Bond Edition).
At the push of a button we could go from smooth, quiet road tires to loud, squeeling, go anywhere tank treads.

If you have some extra cash laying around, then i would also recommend looking at Toyo Open Country M/T. They are regarded by most to be the best on-road Mud-Terrain tire. Two big negatives: very heavy and expensive. They are generally 10 lbs/tire heavier than another brand at the same size. This is from it's heavy duty construction. These tires are hard to find and relatively expensive.

My experience with them is from out recent off-road trip. A fellow Rubicon owner had them. They look real nice and he loves them on the highway. He did not notice much weight issue...he did not even know that they were heavy until i mentioned it. He said that they were real smooth and makes little noise. But, remember, this guy drives a Rubicon and thus, road noise is probably not his main concern. In MUD, i did notice that my Firestone Destination M/T did clean a bit better than the Toyos. Again, this is very limited experience on my part.

But, definitely, for YOUR needs, i would stay away from BFG M/T (too much noise) and Goodyear MT/R (relatively bad in mud & poor wear).

I got me a set of Firestone Destination A/T's and am very happy with them. I drive about 70 miles a day for work and play in the mud as much as I can and they have performed very well for me. Tread is not quite as aggressive as the BFG all terrain T/A ko but I have no problem in rain and snow.

That was a good review Thai. I like that you compared them to the A/T KO's since those are the 2 major tires I'm looking at. A friend of mine had the Destination M/T's on his Wrangler and I was impressed at first site. I drove it a bunch of times and it handles better with them then the junk goodyear tires that were on it before. He had considerable road noise (to be expected with a soft-top) but I never really minded that anyway. I thought the tires had excellent wet traction, a lot better then I expected out of an M/T.

What kind of mileage are you getting out of the tires? What did you get out of your BFG's? i never really considered getting an M/T tire because I thought they would get worn out fast on the road, but maybe I was wrong. Do mud tires have good traction in deep snow? My friend traded in his Jeep for a Titan (regretting it now) before we got to try them out in the winter.

Nice! 40K-50K out of an M/T is more then I expected to hear. I was thinking of more around 30K. Maybe I'm a little tire retarded but what is siping? Is that the same as putting studs in it?

Pennsylvania used to be a good winter state but lately, aside from this year (yay!), the winter's have been fairly mild. NW Pa, near New York tends to get a little uglier though.

How about a med-aggressive AT tire and a set of rear chains?

I always think I need the most safety/traction on snow/ice/rain at highways speeds. If I am in deep snow or mud I am not likely going fast anyway. Therefore if I loose traction/get stuck it just isn't as big a risk as (in my opinion) loosing control at highway speeds.

My Copper STT's have been really nice in the snow. Drove from Sioux Falls to mil-town in early January during a snow storm and I can say they did freakin great. They do eat up an MPG or 2 but otherwise they seem to be a good tire. Not a lot of weights to balance them either.
