I just traded Sheila in for a 2013 Subaru Outback LTD. I decided it was time when I found that my frame rails had rusted completely through in the typical spots, right above the rear LCA mounts. Since she probably didn't have a full winter left in her, I decided it was finally time.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to all of you that helped me over the years. I was able to keep this thing going WAY longer than it should have because of the great info, enabling me to do so much work myself.

She was a great vehicle for over 6 years, as long as I replaced crap tons of parts every year. She handled the couple years of massive snow here in NE with aplomb, and i had tons of fun with it.

Good luck to the rest of you on keeping these 3rd Gen's on the road. Happy trails!

Nelson, I figured you were already gone as I hadn't seen you on the forum for a while. I remember seeing all your rust issues thinking it's only a matter of time before he gets rid of that thing. Ive been considering selling mine for something a little more car like for my commute. Maybe an 04 or 05 Rav4.

Good Luck with the Subie!, We picked up an original owner, 37,000 mile, garage kept, 04 Outback LL Bean for my GF over a year ago. It's been a great car so far.

The many Picard face palm postings is what I will remember most about Matt along with the 12ton press and the rusted out differential carrier.

Also I can't forget our loathing of Boston drivers in general. Great place to live, hate the weather.

Geez, you should have just done a frame swap like TheDurk. I'm very thankful for all the information you've posted here and on yotatech over the years. You've saved me many a headache. I'm sad to see you go, but I hope you enjoy your subie and can add to some subie forum somewhere. Just keep the same avatar.

I have a Nissan Leaf electric car for kicking around town. The 4runner only gets used for special trips.

Regarding rust, aren't there now ways to hold it back? POR15, oil spray etc?

It's always sad to see the guys that really contribute to this site, leave. Best of luck with the Subaru, and I'll say, Subaru's are one of the most popular vehicles here in the Okanagan, in our snowy mountain valleys, as their Winter performance is second to none! However, they're not an off-road vehicle!
Every Ski-mom has a Subaru!

Remember, when you need your dose of 4Runner, you have 2 options:take out a Mortgage for a 5th Gen, OR, take a couple of weeks, come West, pick up another 3rd Gen in Cali, NV, AZ, explore some, drive it home and save $20K!!!

It's crappy about the rust. My brother lives in Toronto and I went to visit him this Fall, and was shocked to see no older vehicles! If my stable of vehicles were out East, they'd all be in the junkyard! I noticed few cars >10yrs old... now I know why the forums for my vehicles are less than active, seeing that we only have 2 vehicles out of 6 built this century! I've never seen a 3rd Gen 4Runner at our local Pick N' Pull and only just spotted a couple of 2nd Gens... lots of 80's cars and lots of 90's domestics.
