we were initially thinking of flying up and renting a car, but that's not too cheap, and we wouldn't be able to bring camping gear

so now we're trying to decide whether to bring the fuel efficient TDI and camp, or bring the 4Runner and camp (and build the sleep platform before then as a back-up plan)...

Yellowstone NP is so large, what would you recommend in 5 days time?

I vote 4Runner + sleeping platform. Then you can go more places.

YNP can easily be seen in 5 days time, as well as the neighboring park, Grand Tetons. Yellowstone's roads are circular, so it is pretty easy to do a self-guided thing...

PM me when things get closer and you can bug me about more detailed stuff!

The best way to visit the park is to go from one end to the other. Like, start in Jackson or Cody, go up through one park, loop around in the other, and then exit at the other end. So if you start in Cody, go around the loop in YELL, then go south through the GRTE (Grand Tetons) to Jackson. These parks are big, but there is a pretty simple road system, so it is very self-guiding, like I said.

Right now, I would advise looking at maps of YELL and GRTE, and then get back to me with questions...

Also would advise visiting Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area - really cool views and such, about 100 miles east of Yellowstone's East Gate.

We should meet up sometime! I would love to visit Driggs sometime, that is over the Tetons, I've heard it is really pretty over that way! Jealous you live close to there!!

Thanks man! Yeah, it is an effect in my point and shoot camera, sometimes it comes out great, and other times, not so great... I think the one of the people above the falls is okay though, I really like that one.

Solo Sunday.

Finally got to drive the 4Runner after about 4 weeks, been daily driving my beater Lumina. I headed out on a nearby area that I had wanted to drive for sometime, I had been over much of the main road part for work years ago, but not in the 4R with me driving. Had a lot of fun and it was good to get out and about! This is in my backyard. :dance:

Another light wheeling trip today, about 3-4 hours, again, in my backyard/where I work.

Did it with a buddy's 1989 Dodge Dakota (he's working on an expo type build, has a great start so far - build thread on ExPo: The Big Blue Truck. Problem was, he had worked on one of his transmission-related seals the night before, and somehow, something wasn't right, so the oil started leaking. We continued on in my 4Runner, had a good time still!

On to the pics! :nod: Not nearly as pretty as my previous post - but was still good to get out.

Got to meet a few of the faces of this forum by joining some of the 3rd gens for a run at the Badlands Offroad Park, southwest of Indianapolis (yes, quite the change from the Rockies!).

I had a blast, enjoying the new kind of terrain and especially the creek based trails, SO much water wheeling! haha
