Fatty's 88 4Runner Build

sounds like a sweet build plan. with what your gonna run under this bad boy, dont rebuild the 22, just upgrade now and save the money doing it right the 1st time. the 22 wont be enough for what your looking at. im sure your gonna run 37-42 inch tires.

if you run a chevy engine, better look at upgrading the drivetrain to handle the extra power. another option would be a 3.4 s/c swap. auto crawler is much better imo. great all around and stalling isnt an issue unless you roll backwards in drive

I agree! I'm going to fix my engine and sell it. I can get a lot more for it if it doesn't burn any oil and is more or less new.

I'm throwing around ideas of keeping the 4runner all toyota and using a 1grfe or 2uzfe engine with some fj80 axles.

nice, you should have no problems selling a fresh rebuilt 22.

i would love to see someone do a nice write up on the 4.0 swap. that is a sweet motor. plenty of power.
the 2uzfe is a pretty built motor with hardly any issues i have heard of. smooth engine with plenty of power.
i too would like to see an all toyota build but dana axles will be ok for me lol the fj80 axles be cool if you do keep it all yota!! this might limit you to 37 inch tires and 40 if you can manage to stay off the skinny pedal.
hope you keep up with the plan and aim for the 6 month completion

WAY more power! If it doesn't come close to 300hp then I'm not even going to consider it. Nate was telling me about using a 302 out of a 88-93 mustang. It's a smaller package so I don't have to use a big body lift. Ideally, I'll use or make a hood cowl so I don't have to use a body lift at all. I would like to raise the drivetrain while I'm at it and do a flat belly. We'll see... I cannot get too creative because this gets very expensive very fast!!

I'm also into building mustangs, the 5.0 HO is an awesome motor with lots of available upgrades. You can even make a 289 scream pretty hard, I am currently building one as we speak :) Are you going carb or efi?

Agreed! Those little Ford 5.0 motors are pretty tough and really affordable to build. Also, they came in Broncos and F series trucks. So I'd think trannys etc. should be easy to match.

I'm not really partial to any one engine. My goal in the end is to have a v8 with enough power to easily move my 4runner with at least 37" tires on heavy axles and a lot of extra steel for body armor. I would also like to not use a body lift, if I need to use a 1-2 inch hood cowl then I will do that and try to make the lines smooth so it doesn't look like a redneck pickup truck. I've been looking into a 2uzfe out of a 05-09 4th gen 4runner as well. From what I understand, the a340 auto tranny from the 2nd and 3rd gen 4runners mate to it and I can also get an adapter to run a r150 manual to it as well if I decide to use a manual tranny. I also like the idea of a OBD2 system and the theft deterrent system of the ignition on the 2uz engine ecu. Plus, the 2uz has 300hp and 310 ft/lbs of tq with the VVI.

We'll see. I really don't think I'm going to buy an engine or anything for this 4runner till the end of March so I have plenty of time to do my research and think about how I'm going to put the beast in this 4runner. My goal by the end of the year is to have FoG's kids rebuild my 22re and teach them a thing or two on the workings of an engine then sell it.

i vote you keep a yota heart in it...here was my plans for a swap..the turbo lag should help keep the rest of the drive train in one piece

I will put a chevy v8 in the 4runner though. I am not sure which engine I will use but I want a solid reliable power plant with the power numbers above. I prefer an auto tranny so i will use a complete chevy drive train. .

Then you can go with a 3 or 4 speed Atlas transfer case.

How did I miss this thread?
First I see that you are selling your rig.
Then I see that you tore the drop bracket lift and you were parting it out and getting into a 3rd gen.
Now this.

Smart choice. It sounds like it'll be an awesome build.

As for the bob. I hope you don't cut off to much storage or sleeping space. A shorter rear is appealing to me but I could not do without the interior space. I'll just drag the bumper, no harm there.

I'm having a heck of a time making up my mind on this project. Is it really a good idea to go with the stuff you would normally have on a buggy for a dd/wheeler? I mean, if I'm going to go all out on a build I might as well have a buggy, right? On the other hand, I still want a bad @$$ wheeler that is reliable on the most hardcore trails to still get me home after a hard day of wheeling.

For now I'm fixing my 22re and will re-install it in the 4runner. I'll put a few thousand miles on it so if/when I do sell it, I know I'm selling a well built and reliable engine.

I will definitely throw a solid axle under the front, but at this point I'm not sure if I'll use a d60 or a built trail gear rock assault housing. I'll most likely run the zip lockers in the front and rear of either setup...

Too many decisions... Chevy v8, SC 3.4, built 22re, d60, tg axles, dual xfer case, atlas xfer case, 35's, 37's,...

I have some time to think about it though. I'm not doing anything huge till after March.

We're going to have fun after March! I have BIG plans too.

Either way you're going to have fun with it!

350, auto, and dual tcase

I had a 86 p/u I did something very similar to years ago. If your going for a chevy drivetrain you may want to look at backing the 350 with a 700r4 and an atlas t-case. There are also allot of options with a np205 case. I liked the 700r4 simpley because its a tried and trued set up and has O/D.
You may consider a vortec 4.3L instead of a 350. Its virtually a 350 block just in v6 form and makes plenty of power without getting into "stupid power" range.. I ended up taking the 350 out and using the 4.3... It fit ALLOT better, not only in the engine bay but for the overall balance of the truck. If that makes sence.

THE key to a good rig, for me, is something that I can drive 1000 miles to the trailhead, wheel for a week and drive home.

Keep it drivable.

There are tons of ways to make an awesome rig but too many won't drive them that far or have to trailer them. There are too many trails here and in Moab that are in one end and out somewhere else.

The great thing about that ultimate buggy is that you can do those top three #10 rated trails... But anything less is boring.

You could SAS the front with leafs and leave the rear as is.

I have been thinking about that too...

I dunno man... too many decisions. I'm not good at these decisions. My wife stopped listening to me when it comes to talking about my hobbies. I think I have told FoG about a dozen different setups that I'm going to use in my 4runner. haha. oh well. Either way I go, it will get me to and from the trails.

I still say: Armor it up and add a Chevy 350, Detroit locker in the rear, leave the suspension as is, 529 gears and 37" tires. You could dominate 99% of the trails here in Colorado just like that.

Armor and SAS with whatever Supra engine you can find that would give you the power you want.

This would keep it marketable for when you get the itch for another project, cause something tells me you will be moving on to another not long after whatever you build is done. :jump:
