Federal, 50 state, or Cali

So ive searched for nearly an hour and will now ask the question. Im looking for two new catalytic converters. What year did all 4Runners become 50 state legal? If I order replacement front and back cats these will work for my vehicle correct? Looking on Car-stuff.com I can find front and rear cats for under 200 but they say not for Cali emissions. If that were the case wouldnt there be only single cat? Im sure someone can answer this for me. Thanks.

The question does not make sense as written. All 4Runners used the one cat system up through '98.In 1999 and 2000 there were separate Federal one-cat) and Cali. (two-cat) emissions standards. Then 2001 was the first year the two-cat system became standard on all US 4Runners. When you see a front or rear cat that says 'Not for use or sale in California', it is because they are not CARB-approved replacement parts. They can be used on two-cat vehicles (1999 and 2000 Cali.'s, and all 2001+) that are used outside California. So you can use the cheap aftermarket parts if you don't live in California. Whether they will throw a code or not and what their life is is an open question. I don't think you will see a front or rear cat with the description "not for Cali. emissions" as you state.
