Lexus has a TSB for it on the GX (I've had it performed on mine), but unfortunately Toyota, AFAIK, does not.

Yea I have a 2007 runner and it's driving me crazy. Toyota knows about it and can't seem to come to a solution. I called and let them know that it was unacceptable on a 30 thousand dollar vehicle. They were sympathetic but offered nothing more.

I agree there are ways to minimize it, but in as nice a vehicle as the 4runner is this just pisses me off. I'm a dyed in the wool Toyota fanatic but they need to do something about the clunk.
I had a 2000 Tacoma and a 1998 P/U before and didn't have a problem. The clueless service rep just says "son, that a normal characteristic of the vehicle." Give me a break! :rant:

First post - you guys are great and put together a great site that has helped tremendously since buying my 07 4Runner. I bought my Runner as the result of being rear ended, so the first time a few days ago I experienced this clunk in traffic, I knew right away what it was. So glad I found this site - thanks.

It's when the entire axle housing rotates when you come to a stop. Some have reported that the thump no longer exists when the mount (don't know the proper name off the top of my head), but it's like a trailing arm and it bolts up to the center around the diff and runs along side the driveshaft up to the frame. The thump that it's felt is from the slip yoke not sliding smoothly, which caused by axle wrap.
I've noticed the same clunk. Good to see that it's not an issue specific to just me.
Another thing I can't seem to get used to is that when I'm sitting at a red light or whatever and the A/C compressor kicks in, I have to have my foot extra hard on the brake to keep it from rolling. This can be disconcerting in traffic.
On a funnier note, I was driving through a parking lot, coasting in gear, when I came to a rise in the pavement. I didn't hit the gas, because I was not really paying attention, and all of a sudden I felt a BIG clunk, and the truck went right up the rise. I was sure Someone had run into me or I had rolled back into them. I figured out, though, that the "hill assist" had kicked in and pulled me up the hill. LOL
