Fender flare clarification? Adding SR5 to base model

There's nothing special about the rear holes. They are in the return lip inside the wheel well. You can see a few of them in the second picture. The flares should come with fender washers/nuts and rubber pads for each location. The clips for the rear doors also use a little pad of paint protection film (thick sticker) - they have little teeth that hold on to the doors!



I added the rubber trim that is used on the Tacoma flares to clean up the look of mine.

I also could use the PN (if you're talking about the gasket things). I might actually put my trim back on if I had those. Seems like a hassle to try and DIY.

Looking forward to those pictures. When you get the flares, can you tell me if they already have a rubber gasket installed? Also where did you find them, and is the seller sending the hardware as well?

I bought 5 just to be safe... I do remember having lots leftover though. Too lazy to walk out to the garage to check to see if I can find the leftover bits though.

I did put protection film under the clips on the doors. I used stuff meant to protect door edges from paint chips (like 1" wide in a roll, in the 'rice' section of the auto parts store)

I originally installed them without the trim, like factory, but wanted to clean them and get them looking nice. When I re-installed them I put on the trim between the outside edges of the flares and paint.

Sounds like I need to take some more detailed photos...

From what I remember you really do need those sticker pads because the metal clips slide right on the door and would damage the paint for sure. The stickers are really thick. I can find all the flare pieces/clips I took off and take pics if you want. I took that flare off because I could never find the discontinued mud guards for it and it sprays dirt up the side to an insane level without the running boards. It might be ok with the 3D printed caps I guess. I put the base model mud guards on with zero flare but my new tires rub on them sometimes.

Mine was missing the rubber from day 1, and the fender paint shows it. Looking at pics of ones for sale just now they don't seem to have it. When I searched that PN it came up as a Tacoma part. Looks like it works on the 4runner too though.

The black flares never had any trim on the outer lip. Only the Limited and wide-SR5 (painted, same width as Limited) flares had the rubber trim.

I realize this is probably ridiculous on my part, but if I can't add fender flares, I don't want to buy this 4Runner that I have been eyeing. For some reason I think the fender flares completely make the truck look a thousand times better, and I hate the look of no flares. I have always been under the impression that it was pretty easy to add the black flares to a base model, but I was just digging around the forum and it seems like I might have to drill holes and that the hardware is hard to find. Can anyone confirm?

I consider myself lucky for finding a 98 Limited in May 2021. Not knowing anything and not wanting a Limited until I found out it had a factory working locker.
I'm just missing the front bumper flares. The whole bumper actually is from another non flared 4runner. its all good though. I originally was window shopping for a beater S10 or Ranger 4x4. both open diffs.

There are clips that clip onto the door lip with screw bosses at 90° that the flare trim screws onto. If these don't come with the flares that you find/buy you will have to haunt junkyards till you find 8 of them; 4 per door.
