Fender Flare Compatibility

I have a '99 SR5 with the black flares, and I'd like to remove the running boards but don't really care for the way the flares terminate at the ends of the wheel wells without the running boards in place...

I know the Limiteds have some additional body cladding that requires square holes in the sheet metal, but what about the flares themselves? Are they transferable across trim levels using the same holes?

I think I want this style of flare, but I don't know if I can actually put them on my car or what to look for exactly. Please assist.

The two types of flares mount differently. The textured black ones I believe you have screw into "mounts" along the fender edge. The flares you have pictured (from some SR5s and limiteds) go through holes jn the fender that you would need to drill. Check out Blktpgsr's build thread, he installed them. It's a tough job, especially since you have to be precise in measurements when drilling the new holes.
If you remove the running boards, you can buy mudflaps that cover that gap. They run $60ish..that's what I plan on getting. Or if you aren't going to sell your boards, you can remove the section from the end of the board that goes in the front and modify it to make a "mud flap".

Those should be sport flares up top but IIRC they are the same size as the limited flares. You can tell they aren't limiteds because the body cladding on the rear door and fender flare are one piece.

I can't say for sure about the sport flares but I'd bet they will have the square holes you would have to drill out in your fenders. Somebody on here installed limited cladding on their nonlimited 4runner. I'm sure it's not extremely easy but with the right hardware it could be done.

Save your money and just buy the mudflaps which mine came from the showroom this way since the previous owner opted out of the Running boards when new.

I want to say someone used the body molding tape or body epoxy (can't remember) to mount them and hasn't had any troubles. I'll be doing this method when the time comes

So the first picture is not your 4Runner correct?

I think you posted the SR5 Sport Flares; the same type BFAD has on his rig. As pictured, they don't have "running boards" installed on the vehicle doors. In contrast my rig has 97 Limited flares which include "running boards".

This would be a lot clearer with a picture of what you have.


It is confusing but here are the types: SR5 black, SR5 metal, SR5 sport (no running-boards), Limited (w/ running-boards) or no flares.

The photos are not the actual mudflaps. You need to order the first (driver side front) and the third (passenger side front) flaps listed. Look up a couple posts and you can see RonMaidens...his are installed.

as for wheeling, they could possibly get in the way as much as anything else can. Two options are removing them temporaily (they screw on) or cutting them to a shorter length as 98'4RunnerSR5 did...check out his build thread for a pic.

If it was my truck I would just add the mudflaps from Toyota. They are about 60 bucks plus shipping from most of the online sites.

These are the ones pictured on the Green 4Runner above. I bought them for my truck and they fit just like they are supposed to. The only issue you may run into is the bottom fender bolts tend to rust and sieze. I just drilled them out and used a self-tapping bolt instead.
