Fender Flare options

Bushwacker for $489 or whatever it is. Can't do it.

I'd like to find something used. What came factory? Are they all the same, or was SR5 different than a higher trim model?

What's best chance at finding a set of those black SR5 flares? Not seeing anything on Ebay or classifieds or even the goog for that matter.

If you have the much larger fender flares that were black, your best bet is to watch craigslist for part outs or hit up a salvage yard. They are much more expensive than $489 if you try the dealership.

If you don't have the large flares, you'll have to drill your fenders if you want to install them. It's rather irreversible and liable to make mistakes, as in they won't line up correctly.

My SR5 is 98 with the small trim you are talking about. My tires stick out bit and the thicker black ones would be nice to have.

Are the SR5 99-02 different than the painted ones? I don't mind drilling, they look nice.

Black factory bushwacker you won't mess up your doors or fenders, they screw in on inside lip, rear door has pinch clips. The Limited ones has holes on the fender and quarter faces. You'd need to template a donor to drill right spot, no turning back. But worth it if you wanna go that route. I have some Limited flares for sale for $80, no front bumper peices cause had off-road bumper.

Limited flares will fit on your car if you have the little chrome "flares" now. There are enough mount holes in common along the underside of the fender, and with the use of double sided tape you can get them on. May need to drill another hole or two on the underside lip of the fender if you want them more sturdy.

Proof:

The rear ones are a little harder to get on.

Options are Bushwacker, Limited, 2000 and up painted SR5, and 1999 and down black SR5. Limited and 2000 up SR5 require drilling. The other ones mount to edge of wheel openings. If planning on hacking fenders to fit very large tires you will be cutting the edge off your fenders.

there seems to be more to it with mudflaps and/or running boards?

if don't want running boards, do i have to find with the right mudflaps instead of running boards? the first pic shows it looks like fronts go down to mudflaps, and second pic looks like running boards? how's it look if you get running board style but don't have flaps with them?

The front mudflap was a factory part, but is no longer available new, and hard to find used. I'm not sure what models came with the flaps vs running boards. Actually, I think the flaps might be a '99 Highlander only part.
There is a fellow on here who 3D prints filler pieces to complete the flare without a mudflap or running board.
The '00-02 SR5 flares are the same size as the Limited flares, but do not have the body cladding that the Limited have.
The '00-02 SR5 flares are often referred to as "Sport" flares, but they are- in fact- on all '00-02 SR5. This includes '00 Highlanders and '01/02 Sports.

From looking at pics on the interwebs you do see 2000s with those flairs - but most were the color-matched ones. Maybe it was an early 2000 production run change.

You could get them with either I believe. Same with 99s.

I'm pretty sure the SR5 thin black flares were a dealer option, not factory. That's why you cant buy them new anymore or the clips that hold them on.
