Heres a few pics of how smoky it is up here from this fire in N. Colorado. The dang wind shifted today, and its so thick you can hardly breath!

God I hate the smoke.

We had a bunch of it blow into Raleigh last summer from the coast. IT was 100 degrees with almost no visibilty because of the smoke, it was that thick. I was working lawn care at the time, and of course we kept working; worst day ever

Yeah, wow, that would suck!! Luckily here its only about 80. So feels good, but man its thick. Even getting some ash fall from it!!

Wow, thats crazy! My mom lives in Cheyenne about an hour north of you and she texted me today telling me she had to closer her windows as the smoke was bad at thier house. The fire is in the Poudre Valley Canyon right? I rode that canyon 4 times on my bike last summer. crazy

Yup, thats it. We had to shut all our windows too. Cheyenne is actually only 30 minutes from me, so they are probably seeing it just at bad!!

It is going to be a tough summer here in Colorado for fires. I could smell the smoke in Aurora this morning.

You beat me to it HighCountry, I live in Aurora and noticed it this morning too. Hope it can be contained soon and fear we'll be seeing a lot of fires this year.

Yeah, it really sucks too!! That is one of the main things ive been wanting to do since we moved up here a few months back. Go camping in the mountains. Its just no fun if you cant have a campfire. But regardless, I sure hope they get it contained quick. It spread over 4000 acres just last night!! It was only spreading about 300 acres a day, but that wind picked up yesterday and man, its up to over 5000 as of this morning.

Man, went from 5090 acres yesterday morn to 7300 this morning, and still only 5% contained. Not good.

Exactly what I was going to say. I spent three summers fighting fire in Oregon and Norcal. These pics bring back memories.

And unfortunately the forrestry units are predicting a lot of fires for years and years to come due to the mountain pine beetle epidemic. Stupid beetles. From the time they infect a tree it dies within a month, then falls a year or two later. When I was a kid we spent a lot of time in the Snowy Mountain Range outside of Laramie, and I remember the thick green pine forrests. Now its patches of grey everywhere you look. Same with Yellowstone. They also predict that there wont be mature pine forrests in the mountains again for around 100 years, and they think the pine beetles will eventually spread to the east coast.

Good thing is it is now 45% contained!!! Another good thing, is Kelly Flats is now open, but the bad, 14 is closed due to the fire. I know a back way though. If weather permits, I might know what im doing tomorrow!!! Also just swapped out my wifes 249 transfer case in her grand cherokee, and put in a 242. Need to go try it out!!!

We were a type one contract crew with a really good rep (all the forest service guys are going "contract crew? good rep? bullpucky!"). Kinda awesome, because on the bigger fires we'd get staged somewhere on quick response detail, and sit around all day on the clock playing cribbage and working on our tans , and then when we got the call it'd be for initial attack. No gridding or digging secondary for us, it was great.

I was real close to trying out for BLM smokejumpers, but then I tore up my ankle on a ski slope and dq'd myself. Now I'm a bitter broken old man with a desk job, lol.
