I am looking at buying a 2018 T4R, mainly for its mechanical low range gearing, but one thing that concerns me is the safety ratings as a result of the body-on-frame construction.

Are there any vehicles on the market that are unibody construction (typically with better crash test scores), but also with a mechanical 4WD system like the 4R has?

i don't think i have ever purchased a vehicle based on crash testing results.

you know a 5 star rating in the 90's means a 0 star rating today?

not because of how old, but how much technology changes, so technically a 5 star rating today will be tomorrows 2 star rating....all in all, a silly measurement of buying a vehicle...
buy the car you want!

Is the Skid Plate not available with the KDSS?

Looking at the 2018 4R, on the Toyota build/price, it seems that when you add the "TRD Enhancement Package" with the Skid Plate, it must remove the KDSS option. This is on both the OR and ORP trims.

Is it not possible to have both a skid plate and the KDSS system on the vehicle?

Also, I see the TRDPro does not have the KDSS option available. Is taht replaced by the Bilstein shocks? Are these shocks "Better" than the KDSS system?

Jeep GC is the first on that comes to mind.. Good luck with that though. If you are going to use it offroad.. the frame comes in real handy.

Yes, you have to buy it after and modify it to fit. Can't remember the thread title off hand, use the search, there is already a thread or two on the subject.

Instead of modifying the factory skid wouldn't it be easier to just buy a skid from RCI or ARB that is made to work with KDSS ?

but but but, its so cheap to build unibody!

lol, when looking for an SUV i settled on the 4runner for looks but mostly for chasis-on-frame design.

when explaining to people why thats important...i usually lost them.

That's because for 99% of use cases unibody is better. You need to be talking to the right people for it to make sense.

Safety is important especially for people with families and should not be mocked. Good point that a 5th gen is pretty safe compared to older cars though.

It should also be noted that a Rubicon is body on frame and does better in the offset frontal test. Not that I'd buy a POS Heep but they do have their strong points.

It's off topic, but the JK powertrain is a joke. I've got an '04 Rubi that will go circles around the JK in terms of drivetrain ability.
The issue with the JK powertrain is nothing new. Complaints started from consumers as soon as it was on the market. Add in the fact that's it's ugly, and you've covered everything everything.

IIHS insurance claim data (using actual claims, vs non-real-world-crash-testing), shows the 4wd 4runner (and 2wd Grand Cherokee) have the absolute lowest claims payouts for personal injury among midsize SUVs
