To be concerned about safety metrics is noble and applauded. To do it incompletely or without the bigger picture can be anything from cherry picking to ignorant.

You're much more likely to die in single car incidents (aka high speed rollover or loss of control) in an SUV than multi-car crashes. There's dozens of other death traps that fair much worse in a multicar collision than a 4Runner.

I got rear ended twice in my last 4 Runner. Both times sitting at a dead stop at a stop light. The second time, the woman hit me so hard, I LITERALLY had change from the console falling from the roof and in my hair. THAT is how hard the impact felt. For a moment, I thought "what in THE ****" as pennies and nickels and quarters rained down from above. When I got out, she had plowed into my hitch receiver and TOTALED her car. Deployed her airbags, roughed her up quite a bit. Front end was a mess. My 4Runner on the other hand was barely damaged. It required the body shop to verify the frame wasn't warped and the rear hatch was dented slightly.

My point is, few vehicles are an answer to all prayers. Each vehicle may perform admirably or horribly depending on specific situations.

Jacking up a 4Runner 3 inches above stock height is great for offroading. At 75mph on a long trip it makes it even more of a death trap if the driver has to suddenly swerve to avoid something. In a tall SUV, the occupants turn into a milk shake when the vehicle rolls.

A 15 passenger van for instance, might have okay front and side crash ratings and such, even with modern airbags, but most 15 pax vans can be made to rollover at speeds less than 40 mph with a hard turn of the wheel.

I tend to look at the frame on design as a safety advantage, not a liability.

Again, with safety you have to look at stability (high speed) low velocity multiple car crashes, basically the whole picture.

4Runners aren't the safest vehicle made, but not because of multi car collisions, they have the same deadly flaw that all high(er) center SUVs with marginal handling performance have.....rollovers.
 
I am looking at buying a 2018 T4R, mainly for its mechanical low range gearing, but one thing that concerns me is the safety ratings as a result of the body-on-frame construction.

Are there any vehicles on the market that are unibody construction (typically with better crash test scores), but also with a mechanical 4WD system like the 4R has?

Short answer: yes, with great performance as well, but for much more $$$

Long answer: drive slower
 
My wife drives a 2014 Subaru Forester XT because it can handle "most" of what we deal with while camping, it is faster than most cars on the road, it has a nicely sized interior, and it was rated the highest in safety ratings for 2014. It is fairly comfortable and easy to drive. She absolutely loves it.

All of the above being said, 99% of the time we take the 2015 4Runner anywhere from around town to across the country. Her Subaru gets used when I am not around, and the 4Runner is with me.

When gauging safety, the biggest thing that will help you is the driver. The ability to avoid accidents by reading the road ahead and being aware of your surroundings is heavily understated in today's training of drivers. Sure, there are incidents that you cannot do anything about, but most "accident" situations are avoidable via an alert, attentive, and well trained driver. This is also true off road.

And the Subarus are known to blow head gaskets around 100K miles.

I do not thinks this sounds correct… safety rating (whatever one you looking at) is not connected to the “body-on-frame construction” as the main culprit for that rating being lower or higher.

If you are looking for “mechanical 4WD system” that would match capability and quality of 4Runner system, then (IMHO) the answer is: none
 
Residual value of TRDPro

Wondering if anybody can comment on whether the TRDPro models have held their residual values better than the other trim lines?

A PRO is about 1k more than an ORP with KDSS, it might pay off over time if the residual is better.

Thoughts, Comments?
 
I have seen some people are selling their cement pros for 47+ to dealerships. Cant imagine what they turn that around to sell for a profit.
 
Safety Sense on 2019 4R??

I see that the TRDPro 2019 has been announced at an auto show earlier this year with no mention of the Safety Sense...

HOWEVER

It seems logical that Toyota might not announce that in advance, because it would kill their sales for the rest of 2018, if people knew to wait a few more months.

Any thoughts, speculation, insider rumours as to whether we will get it in MY 2019??
 
I second that LOL I have KDSS and Full RCI skid plate system

I am looking at the RCI website and the skid plates seem affordably priced.

Would installing the skid plates void the warranty at all?

Are they the kind of things that a mechanic would charge a lot of money to install?

I am not a car person, just an ordinary folk looking forward to my 4R
 
KDSS vs. Bilstein Shocks

So it looks like on the TRDPro model, the KDSS system is not available. Correct?

Are the Bilstein shocks "better" than the KDSS system, for on or off-roading?
 
Wow, didn't know this even existed for Toyota cars/trucks... right on...
I wonder how all this stuff works off road? Especially the auto breaking.

There's a TON of threads and information about this already posted (arguably one of the most discussed items since KDSS came out).
 
Depends on where you are located. Certain places a pro will have a $10k markup. People are actually buying the TRD OFf road and making it look like a pro then selling for profit.

Keep in mind that your $1k MSRP difference is more like $5-6k difference. Dealers will sell the TRD off road under MSRP all day long.

It really gets into what you want and what is "like" the other. The two vehicles most "like" the 4Runner that you can buy new today, in my opinion, are the Wrangler and the Land Cruiser. And I don't have anything more to offer than what's been said already, largely that competent unibody vehicles are usually AWD, but to expand a little, I would suggest these unibody vehicles are worth considering, if unibody with AWD/4WD is what you're after:

If off road prowess in an AWD/unibody frame without ground clearance is what you want, look no further than:
Subaru Outback
For comparison, consider other AWD (like the Honda Truck, more or less any luxury SUV)

If you need better clearance/better off road roots, look at:
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Land Rover Discovery
Any other Land Rover you can afford (not sure, but I think they've all moved to unibody)*

Since you can't lift a unibody vehicle, only those like the latter two will give you adjustable suspension systems that allow you to gain clearance when needed (unless you want to outfit your other unibody AWD/4WD with similar tech).

I'm not aware of any others to compare that are unibody, but I'm sure there's at least one or two more to consider.

*A quick glance shows that the JGC Trailhawk starts near $44k for the Quadralift and the Discovery around $54k for its airlift package. Both *reasonable* starting points, before other options, if these are the kind of vehicle you want.
