I'm looking for my first 4runner too. You hit it on the head I've found 98,99,2000 right at 6-7K bone stock. Hope to find what you found.

You guys are lucky. It took me months to find mine. I turned away from several because the road salt up here in Maine and Mass, where my 4runner is from, just eats these trucks alive. The place I bought mine from, had two, my 99 and a 96 with the locker, but I turned it down because the body was rotten below the back doors and the frame had already been patched

Nice Ride, I am jealous. I have been looking for a 02 for abit, and it hard to find one south of 10,000 and in that nice of shape. All the stealerships are asking way to much in my opinion. I have been watching ebay, and it seems the same trucks end up back on the block cus the sellers aren't getting they absourbant reserve prices. I am not even looking in my home province due to rust factor. Would like to find one from arizona or nevada (I can get a cheap flight here to those destination) Sorry about my rant and the hijack! Anyways congrats and enjoy you new ride!

Other than what I stated in PM, you asked about whether I used ATF or ATL.
I used what they recommended as the replacement for the OEM Toyota fluid which is ATF, the other (ATL) is quite a bit thinner and is used to replace Dextron VI.
The two they recommended were the ATF and the "Torque-Drive" ATD which would be a good choice also.
The 0W30 engine oil would work fine also, you might even squeak an extra mpg out of it but I went ahead with the manufacturer recommended weight of 5W30.
We use the 0W30 in my wifes Lexus which works great in that car especially with the top end on that engine that gets so hot and the oil channels so small, I am thinking Lexus/Toyota should really wake up and recommend 100% synthetic 0W30 for those engines anyway.
If they did that from the beginning they would have saved themselves about a billion dollars from all the sludge problems they never would have had.

I hope you do to, only advise I can give is to keep checking Craigslist and Autotrader at least twice a day and the key is to check ALL THE AREAS as far away from you as you will drive to check them out. I found mine 180 miles away.
Everything near me was stock and destroyed.

I was looking for about a month and was getting pretty discouraged because everything was in pretty rough shape, the only 4 Runners that I found near me that were even close to something that I would buy were from Carmax and the lowest price they had was $14,000 and mostly 4th generations.
In fact if the one I got from a private party was at a dealership of any kind they would have been asking $12,000+ for it I am sure because I saw several that were 8,500 to $11,000 and they were no where near as nice.
No Hijack at all, you are doing exactly what I was doing, in fact you should post here when you finally find yours.
You will find it sooner or later, just be vigilant and try every avenue, doing a desert run for a rust free 4Runner sounds like a good idea. But don't forget to rust proof the crap out of it right away when you find one.
I was thinking of doing a west coast run myself because I was originally looking for a 5 Speed with E Locker which seem to be much more prevalent on the west coast than here on east coast.
I got the next best thing though, 2002 Sport Edition I think is the best year and model of the automatics.

True enough, I guess if you can get a really good idea what the truck looks like before you go and you feel good about it then worth a plane ticket for sure.

About the only thing I have had to do to mine since I got it was to add rock sliders so my wife can actually get into the truck.
I feel good pulling into parking spaces now with no worries about those 500lb 6 foot long Cadillac doors. They can wing those caddy doors just as hard as wide as they please now. Wont bother me a bit.
I got the Trail Gear 67" 1 3/4" X .120 1035 DOM tubing.
Painted them with the Rustoleum Professional High Performance Spray paint and Primer then cut some grip tape to fit.

The 02 sport is my favorite trim. i'm not much for chrome, or too many things shiny. Yeah I am keeping a look out, but when the right one comes along I snap it up. Right now I am not in a rush as my beater still gets me to a-b fine, and my kids are still young enough, and wife being on maternity that the one good family car is good enough for now.

Well I did order them from Addicted Offroad but they do not make that type of slider that will fit a 2002 4runner. Theirs are 58" that is $137.00
The one they make for the 3rd generation 4runner is $350.00, great slider to be sure but way more money than I wanted to spend.
So they I guess kind of sub'd out to Trail Gear which is actually what kind they are and where they came from even though I actually ordered them Addicted Offroad. Which is perfectly fine with me, I got exactly what I needed, what I ordered with the same type of tubing and for the same price.
In fact Scottie caught my mistake of ordering a 58" slider and emailed me stating that I should go with 67", then I assume ordered them from Trail Gear and had them sent to me.

Thanks, it is the best way I could figure out how to put it on there to cover the area I wanted covered.
It is 2" wide grip tape, I measured a fat 1/2" on one side and drew a line all the way down one side then simply put the tape on top of the sliders holding it the whole time so it doesn't move then take a sharpie felt pen from underneath just make a mark right where the weld starts on each side of the tubes, then flip it over and draw a nice curve in between the 3 lines. Then I used a pair of scissors to cut it out.
Was really quite easy to do.
On the short pieces just cut to fit between welds then cut a nice curve on each end.
The grip tape is rather forgiving so doesn't have to be perfect to come out looking like it just get it close to the right curve around the welds and you are good to go.
Just make sure that when you put the tape on the slider that you just pull back enough to expose the first cut out, stick the center of the cut out right where it needs to be but stick only just a tiny little bit of it, just enough to hold it in place then pull back to the next cut out and do the same thing stick just enough to get it to barely hold then stretch the tape out to the next one and do the same thing.
Once you have just the 3 cut outs stuck then work slowly from there and it will all fall right into place.

Did a really quick search, seems just the "center guard" like I have is $314.
Have seen a few used ones for between $150-$200.
