Greetings everyone,
I posted a back in October that I was getting a family
"hand me down" 1999 T4R SR5 2WD It is finally mine, tag and titled.
To review. this T4R was purchased new by my parents in 1999. It has been meticulously maintained and is in great shape. It is, however...2WD and I'm okay with this.
It will be a weekender for us, driving to the beach or mountains, state parks, camping, kayaking, mountain bike hauling, and towing our 16ft trailer.
(Landscaping, bulk trash disposal, furniture, etc)
We do not get a lot of deep snow where I am in NC, but make occasional trips to my g-ma's in the mountains during the winter. Roads are usually well salted and/or scraped. Occasionally
have to drive on snow, rarely need 4WD.
Immediate mods, in order, are as follows:
Rims and tires: upgrade the stock 15 inch Enkei's to 16's and put on some decent rubber. (For a 2WD) Suggestions: see options/pictures I am considering towards end of post
This will lead to:
TBU: Depending on the rim/tire combination will do either 199mm or 231mm. Suggestions welcome.
LSD :biggrin2: Limited Slip Differential: I have the Detroit TruTrac in mind. Remember, it is 2WD and I have no desire to spend ARB $, but will appreciate good road manners combined with
power going to the right places. My mechanic will install for $100.
Beyond that, standard stuff:
Big three
Deck Plate
Intake Silencers
2-Din head unit
New speakers
Fog Lights
Roof Basket
Now that we have that out of the way:
Pictures of the ride, and Cpt. Max, are below. Sorry, my folks did not wash it and it has been raining all week.
Pictures of the rims I am considering are also below. One thing I like about the rims on it is how the wheels stick out beyond the fenders. I know that Tundra/Tacoma wheels can sit
further in and I will not use spacers. Aside from that, the more functional questions: What is the truth about Hub Centric vs Lug Centric? Will I see a huge difference? Are all steel
OEM wheels lug centric? Feel free to elaborate.
Lastly, I am considering several tires. I have to keep a budget in mind, but i think I am over highway tires. I am leaning towards AT's and would appreciate input regarding longevity and
value. My budget, depending on the rims/wheels, will max out at ~ $150/tire to $165/tire. BF's, Goodyear, Mickey's, Firestone, Bridgestone, waddugot?
That's it for now. Sorry for the novel. I plan to well document all mods. If I "discover" anything, I'll share. My mechanic is cool with me photographing the TruTrac installation. If I have
time, I will definitely do that.
