Finally making a build thread..

I've had my "98 SR5 for just over a year now, and I'm just now making a build thread for it. This will be mostly a step by step list of the mods I've done, since I didn't do a good job of taking pics of the process itself(until the next mod of course :D)

It doesn't look like I have any pictures of it when I bought it, so here's exactly what it looked like when I picked it up.
OQ_640.jpg

First thing I did was go do a thorough cleaning and replace ALL fluids. Looked like the previous owner did a decent job of keeping the truck maintained. Truck had (2)265/70/16 Firestone Destination AT and (2)Goodyear Wrangler AT tires. Not ideal, but they 3/4 tires have almost new tread, so I'm not in a hurry to upgrade the tires quite yet. Only repairs I had to do right away was a pair of sway bar linkages and a rear lower control arm.

1) First mod was doing the ol sticking the index cards in between the wheel and tire to paint deal.
-Used aircraft stripper on wheels to get it down to bare metal.
-Next step was self etching primer
-Several coats of semi-gloss black
-Several coats of clear coat
The paint has held up 100x better than I thought it would. A little over a year of the paint being on there, only minor wear marks in a few lug holes, and minor chipping on a few of the rim areas. When I pick up a spare set of wheels, I will be re-doing this process instead of powdercoating.

2) Purchased Husky liners for the front seats. Didn't purchase the rear, due to the fact that I don't have people in the back very often. Will purchase the Cargo liner before winter hits this year.

3) Next was taking the Running boards off....No explanation needed.

4) Next up was the lift. Didn't want a stiff ride, so I went all Bilstein and OEM Toyota springs.
-purchased TRD Tundra shocks/springs from a local junkyard and put them on in between one of my work trips. Looked like a pre-runner until the I got the LC springs and Bilstein 5125's(from Toytec) put on, then it became apparent that I needed a little more lift in the front to even it out. While there was nothing wrong with the TRD Tundra shocks, I didn't want to do a spacer lift. I ordered the Bilstein 5100 height adjustable shocks, also from Toytec. I set them on the middle setting and the truck sits dead even.

5) Revtek Differential drop purchased from a local vendor(Tru Motorsports), no explanation needed here either.

6) Was bored one day browsing the classifieds section on yota-tech(I rarely get on there), and came across an ad for a free 1st gen rollbar. Kicker was, he wasn't willing to ship. Lucky for me he was located here in Indianapolis.

-Brought it home and did a quick sand/paint and sat it in the back of the 4Runner. Wasn't happy with it, but it ended up sitting at my work for a few weeks until I had time to do a thorough strip and paint.
-Put several coats of VHT rollcage paint. No primer, no clear coat.
-After I let the paint dry for a day(hey, I wanted to be completely sure it was done lol), I completely wrapped the rollbar in newspaper so it didn't scratch up the paint when putting it through the rear seats.
-Now that it was in, it was time to install it. The mounts obviously won't hold up in the unlikely event of a high speed rollover, but maybe if it were to tip at low speed, it will help....who knows. Made spacers for the rear legs, and backing plates for the bottom of all 4 posts.
-Planning to line the areas of the rollbar where the cargo cover rubs with heli-tape....that way I can still use the cover if needed without rubbing the paint off.

7) Finally picked up some OEM mud guards for the front wheel wells. Luckily the rocker panels didn't get scratched up from going without protection since I took the running boards off. Looks a lot better too!

8) I hate the chrome lined SR5 fender trim, but didn't want to take it off, or pay out the A$$ for the limited or sport fender trim and then get it repainted Desert Dune. I used to have a Lincoln LS, and one of the the common "free mods" was using using electrical tape to black out some of the chrome trim. Decided I would try it out on the fender, so I threw it on quickly one night. It still looks good after a few months, so I'll probably redo it and spend a little more time on it(In my haste I didn't quite get the lengths 100%, and a little chrome shows on a few ends). Is a little more involved than just slapping tape on it, so I can do a short write-up on it if anyone wants...? For the time spent, it's one of my favorite mods.

9) Had some high quality "TRD Off Road" decals made by Freelance Imaging. I do a little vinyl graphics installing at work on our equipment, so I threw these on myself.

10) B&M tranny cooler install. Straight forward, don't need to explain.

11) Last week, after driving this thing around for a year without an antennae or being able to use my Ipod, I finally had enough. I bought a Pioneer Scion head unit with Aux input option from a guy on craigslist. He couldn't sell the Aux adapter, so......I went down to a massive Import car/truck junkyard just outside of Indianapolis(Brickyard Imports).
-Pulled a non-power antennae assembly out of a Taco(the power antennae was broken and missing on mine).
-Browsing through the Toyota truck/suv section, I found a bug shield in perfect condition on a 3rd gen 4Runner. I have a small rust spot on the very front my my hood, so this will cover it up perectly lol.
-I figured while I was there I would go through the Scion section to find Aux harness that I needed. On the very last one, I found what I needed. I had just brought a 10mm socket, pliers, and reg/phillips screwdrivers, so it took a few mins to separate the aux input harness from the rest of the wires that it's bundled with going under the middle console, up near the dash, then over to the cd player. The harness has 8 wires I believe, but only 4 are needed for this install...I just snipped them, they were ran up into the dash.

I followed CO Flyfishers thread on installing the head unit, skipping the aux input deviation. I wish I would've followed it a little closer, as I slightly butchered the trim in the process. Hard to tell in the picture below, it's in the top right corner. The previous owner had super-glued an xm radio mount to the bottom of the trim piece, so it will need replaced either way. You live and you learn I guess :dammit:

I still haven't figured out where I want to mount the actual aux input, so for now it's still sitting under under the middle console, with the cable ran up through the e-brake opening. I think I'll end up mounting it up under the ash tray or in the arm rest compartment like it was originally mounted in the Scion TC.

I'm happy with the truck so far, but I still "need" to do a few things. Hopefully I can get them done before the first snowfall.
-Would like to upgrade the tires, probably to 265/75/16. Not sure what brand/model, but I get 10% off on any Bridgestone/Firestone tire....that may play a factor haha.

-Brakes. Will start off replacing pads/rotors up front, then go to the back if needed. Also need to throw on the extended rear brake line I bought from Toytec when I bought the rest of my lift.

-Adjustable panhard rod

-Cargo area husky liner

-Satoshi grill mod, or some variation of it. I don't wanna pay a lot trying to find an old school LC toyota emblem...with a couple lights in there.

-Dual battery setup....to lay the groundwork for future mods(lights/winch as well as a little more reserve power).

I'll do better in the future when I'm doing mods that way it's a little more pictures/text. Thanks to all the countless people on here that I've used their install and build threads. Feel free to ask about anything I've done if you have questions! I'll do my best to help and take additional pictures for you.

Sweet build! Very good details. How'd you make the spacers and backing plates? lol Any interest in making another set?!

Thanks! for the spacers, just took some scrap aluminum at work, traced the rear feet onto them, and then cut them out on the bandsaw. Marked the holes for the bolts for the spacers and the backing plates. I may be able to do a set in the future when things slow down at work. It's nothing that you couldn't do at home though, in all honesty.

Where at in Indy are you located? You are the first person I've seen on here near me. Everyone else is out west or down south. I had no idea about Brickyard Imports...going to have to check them out. I've got all the stuff to do my satoshi, except time. I've got a buddy of mine that's got some acreage out past Plainfield, we may be doing some trailing out there. Do you still have the tundra setup, I may be interested.

Live on the southside, near Southport/Greenwood, you?

Brickyard is awesome(and massive) but they don't "let" you walk around/browse. I just always walk in and pull what and then deal with them when I have to pay lol. I'm a total off road noob, but if you're looking for another 4Runner to take out there then I'll go if I'm home. I'm still using the TRD Tundra springs, just took off the TRD shocks. I think I threw them away though...one of the stem tips where you hold it with the 7/8mm wrench snapped off.

Nice build dude. As you know, photos are better, but way to document things with the literature.

Didn't I sell you the rear wind deflector? Assuming my C.R.S. isn't kicking in, where is that thing?

It's crazy how many of us start out with these bare bones, soccer mom, Desert Dune 4Runners... and look where we/they end up.

No, it was on there when I bought it. I was talking to you about those seatcovers last winter though...that must be how you remembered the name.

I'm at Emerson and Thompson, so real close to you. I looked that yard up today, I'm going to have to see about going there. I just bought mine last month, so I haven't had a chance to go out with it yet. We'll have to figure something out, with all this rain there's got to be some good mud around here somewhere.

I'm sure I could, but like you I'm crunched for time lol. I look forward to seeing the rest of your build.

haha you're tellin me.. I never would have imagined mine looking like it does now. It's very anti-soccer mom lol.

Really? Where do you usually see me? I've been living in Broadripple since October, but moving back to the south side this weekend. Honk or flip me the bird next time!
