Finally, Snow Today!

OK, it wasn't a blizzard. But Anchorage got a solid 4-5 inches of snow today. So I jumped into my one-week-old 4Runner and started driving.
I've been lovin' my new truck all week, but now I really, really love it!
Going up the hill near my house was a breeze, no slipping at all. The roads were already hard packed from morning traffic, but no problem there, or on smaller streets that hadn't been packed or plowed.
I gotta say that, so far, the stock Dunlops are pretty good on the slippery stuff. They don't stop on a dime, but they stop pretty quickly with just a little ABS help.
I'm so impressed about how easy Thor drives through these light snow conditions. I'll wait and give the Dunlops much tougher winter-conditions testing before I go out and buy the Nokian WR SUVs, or studded Nokian Haaks.
But so far, I'm really lovin' this awesome vehicle. Thanks to all of you for your threads that I read these past few months that led me to buy this T4R, instead of a Volvo, Mercedes, Honda, audi, or any of the other vehicles I researched.

Glad you finally got some snow to play in. I'm going on two months with my new 4R in Western PA and still no snow in the forecast. I'm thinking this may be one of those years I have to go to the snow. From your post and what others have written I won't be disappointed when she finally does see snow for the first time. Think snow!

You will find that the 4Runner will work really well in the snow reguardless of which tires are on it. This is why I can say the true test for the better tire is on a vehicle that has limited traction, not the 4Runner. Also the traction really gets tested when there are over 20K miles on the tires.

Koz is correct , these just keep going on snow unreal handling IMO , best truck in snow I ever had.

I cant wait until you get to drive in a good foot or so you will be grinnin from ear to ear ...

I'm starting to see the limitations of the Dunlops, especially crossing over 1 to 2 ft. crud that has been pushed up in piles by traffic. I still feel completely safe and in control of the truck, but it does wiggle around a little. (I'm havin' fun!)

I've had the 4Runner since September, and can't believe how well it handled today. I'm not sure how much snow we have here in Denver, but it was no trouble at all, even on the side roads. This thing just plows through! It's an amazing vehicle, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. It's been a fun day!!!

I also emailed my uncle up there to find out if he has heard of those tires you want , uses them or know a good place to get them cheaper. He's off doing US Marshall,FBI stuff so my aunt said no idea when he will return.

We've only got about 15 inches of new snow on the ground. Not snowing right now.
There was supposed to be a big blizzard south in the Aleutians and Kodiak Island yesterday. I'm still hoping it hits Cook Inlet and Anchorage tonight.

If he's flying in a bush plane, I hope he's got one of them good pilots.
It all depends on the good sense and judgement of your pilot.
More than once I walked away from getting into a bush flight, because the pilot seemed too coyboy-like for my taste.

Our storm wins. I've got over 28" out here at my parents house. We were supposed to fly to Mexico today too

The Runner did great. I drove up our back driveway with about 18" of snow, full of people and up a pretty decent grade at one point. I thought I was going to get stuck once I hit the grade and instantly lost momentum, but I kept my foot about halfway down, had the center dif locked, and let the computer do its work and sure enough we inched along up the drive. Pretty impressive with the TC clicking along. Now if I were to go out there and try that right now with over 2 feet on the ground I know I'd get stuck, but 18" isn't bad for stock height and highway biased all-terrain tires...

No pics or video yet, maybe later, gotta get to Mexico first.
