Fire Extinguisher Install

Hi everyone,

The first couple of mods I plan on doing are mounting a fire extinguisher and first aid kit. I have a stock TRD Pro and wanted to see what’s working for others before I start drilling.

This thread has been around for awhile, does anybody have any updates as to how their mounts have worked out over the years?

In case anyone wondered...
A Kidde Auto FX5 II fire extinguisher will fit without modifying anything when mounted in the center console, where it is easily reached in the case of an accident or sudden engine explosion or whatever. Pictures are as follows:

Wit's End Mount

Wits End Fire Extingisher Mount: Fire Extinguisher Mount- 5th Gen 4Runner/GX460 (FEM-5)

A guy in another forum mounted one of these in his Land Cruiser. It look really clean, is accessible, and sturdy.

Has anyone put one in their 4Runner?

Thanks. I just installed 2 thermoplastic brackets 6 month ago. Totally reversable and no holes drilled. Also storage bin behind it and tray below are fully useful. That location seem to be strong and well placed in my opinion.

Up until recently, yes. Over the years, the safety insert broke off and the misses had a bad habit of putting clutter in there. At some point, the lid came down and set it off! It was awesome. I'd probably recommend another option to be honest. I'll be looking for a different spot for the next mount.

Tell me about it! I've had mine stored under the folded down rear seats in my '06 for the past two years. Just last Saturday my wife wanted to use the 4runner to haul some girlfriends, so I folded up the seats and threw the extinguisher in the back along with the jumper cables under the raised deck. What I didn't realize was that the safety ring had disappeared, and when the trigger handle slid into the seat back, what a mess - powder all over the place! My wife elected not to take the 4runner after that - her friends are so fussy!

Good ideas for mounting on here, but watch those safety rings.

A fire extinguisher in the truck is a great idea, but realize that the inexpensive dry chemical versions create a huge cleanup nightmare if you ever have to use them. The powder dust is awful, plus it contains monoammonium phosphate, which forms phosphoric acidic which is corrosive to aluminum and electronics.

The aviation industry has been using no-mess halon extinguishers for years, but halon is no longer being manufactured, due to it being a CFC that depletes ozone. However there is a halon substitute that is available, that racing enthusiasts use: halotron. The H3R Performance Halgard series is one brand of extinguishers that uses it. I'm considering buying one from a dealer or Amazon. Of course they are hugely expensive, but so is your vehicle.

how about mounting spots for a 3rd gen

I've got a 5 lb. bottle waiting to go in as soon as I figure out this same question. It fits between the rear door and the seat pretty snug, but it's a less than ideal spot to have it in case of emergency. I'd really like to mount it in front of the passenger seat with something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015G3QXM...eef-827f-cfbadbb7f7ef&hsa_cr_id=2765007990201 that was made for a 5 lb. bottle rather than a 2.5 as I'm hesitant to drill into the floor.

Easy: take measurements (pay close attention because trim is not square and thickness isn't uniform), heat the plastic with heat gun, use vise of bench edge to make 90' angles. So one side stays flat (extinguisher side) and other wraps around the trim ( kind of ----____---- shape). It sort of clamps around that trim bar (use 2 small bolts and nuts). Once you happy with the way it secures drill holes for extinguisher brackets and attach all again. I used thin rubber strips (cut from old bicycle inner tube) inside to keep it in one place and rattle free. GL

P.S. You can make your job easier by using aluminum or sheet metal I just preferred plastic for less industrial look and didn't want to paint any interior pieces.

Fire Extinguisher

No drilling into vehicle required, except for screwing bracket into wood. Wooden base was cut slightly bigger than plastic compartment so when it's pressed into place it fits snugly without coming loose. Release clasp and Extinguisher is ready to use. Extinguisher does need to be removed to access First Aid Kit.

For 3rd Gens, one of the best spots is just right under the driver's seat. The small extinguisher I bought from Amazon (not a 5lb bottle) came with a simple bracket and I just drilled two holes right through the base of the driver's seat, so the screws are facing the fire wall (mounted horizontally, not vertically). I can take a photo if anyone wants to see.

Reason why I put it there is for two reasons:

1. For vehicle fires, every second counts. I didn't want to have to go the rear hatch, open it, pull the extinguisher and then run back to the engine bay. Here I just grab & go.

2. It's wasted space otherwise, even more so if you are short and your seat is pushed forward. It is visible, but that's a good thing. My feet will never touch it though while driving which is key.
