Fire Extinguisher Install

I've been meaning to mount a fire extinguisher in my rear cargo area for a while but I haven't made it a priority until now.

I bought a Kidde fire extinguisher from Checker Auto and the mounting hardware from Ace Hardware. All told I was out less than $25. Kidde seems to be an industry leader in fire extinguishers (I have Kidde in my house, as well) so I figured it was a safe bet. It also seemed to be the perfect size. Not too big that I couldn't mount it where I wanted to and won't take up too much room, but big enough that it could handle a decent size fire before it got out of control.

I mounted the fire extinguisher to the removable jack door/panel on the driver side in the cargo area. I was initially concerned about mounting it there because I didn't know if the door/panel would hold the weight well and I was worried about it coming loose in case of a major accident. I figured I would give it a try because that panel would be much cheaper to replace if I messed up or changed my mind than it would a larger section of the rear cargo area. Not to mention, the other side of the cargo area has the larger storage area that I didn't want to mess with. After mounting the fire extinguisher to the jack door/panel, I was quite pleased with how solid and sturdy it is. I wiggled it quite a bit and gave it a few good yanks, and it didn't budge. So I think it is a perfect place for it. Not too mention, being able to pull the panel off to work on mounting it made it very easy to install. Total time spent doing the install was less than 20 minutes. Anyway, below are some pics.

No problem. Hope the below picture helps....

The mounting hardware you use depends on what brand fire extinguisher you purchase and what kind of mount it comes with. The existing mounting holes on the mount that came with my fire extinguisher fit a 1/4" bolt perfectly. So I bought two 1/4" bolts (about 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" long if memory serves), two of the wide washers you see pictured, and two nylon locking nuts. I went with the wide washers to increase the surface area it is up against and to increase stability. I used the nylon locking nuts so I don't need to worry about them wiggling loose. I drilled two 1/4" holes in the jack door/panel to run the bolts through, and I used a philips head screwdriver to punch a hole in the sound-dampening padding on the back side.

nice job... I did the same thing awhile back. Pretty handy spot to have one. Then I went on the other side and installed a mag light with holder that swivels so you can twist it to point outside or wherever. And of course you can take it off and go.

I'd reconsider that small chrome one, I had one of those "ricey" ones, had a fire and only got about 2 seconds of spray. Good thing we got the fire out with beer.

2010 T4R center console install

In case anyone wondered...
A Kidde Auto FX5 II fire extinguisher will fit without modifying anything when mounted in the center console, where it is easily reached in the case of an accident or sudden engine explosion or whatever. Pictures are as follows:

That's cool. But oh man, I'd be nervous with that thing there. My first one went off in shipping and I received it empty.

I realize all you have to do is keep that little red clip in there, but one quick reach for the sunnies, you slam the lid, and boom, your passenger is now covered in dry chem :lmao:

I mounted mine like this. It has held solid for 3 months now without bending the plastic piece it's bolted to at all. The only time I have to remove it is if I want to move the passenger seat all the way forward. It doesn't affect passenger comfort at all--and I've sat there plenty when my wife drives.

Thanks. It really works--seriously not in the way at all, and a sturdy mount.

I chose there just because someone was saying they'd love to have it in reach if they were pinned in an accident and there was a fire. Well, I suppose it might not help much in that situation, especially if there were an engine or fuel fire, but it's better than not having it there IMO. Hope it never gets used, but I like having it. Plus it might save my interior if a flicked cigarette ends up in the cargo area instead of in a puddle, lol.

I grabbed a Kidde Auto/Marine fire extinguisher from Mennards when we were down in the US this weekend, and mounted it to the rear of the 2nd row seatback, the little bracket that comes with it is pretty slick.

2018 4Runner - fire extinguisher storage location

Some really excellent suggestions in this string for mounting fire extinguishers. I just sold my 2003 4Runner Sport edition, loved that thing, and purchased a 2018 SR5 Premium. I looked through all these good ideas for where to put a fire extinguisher in the new one, as mine was just banging about in the back despite rolled up in some towels - not good! Then I discovered a ridiculously simple solution for these new 4Runners - there's a place to stick a fire extinguisher in the back right IF you brace it in with an angled piece of wood. Using my compound sliding miter box saw, I cut a 45 degree angled 2" x 6" board, for me 3" long at the longest point, and just put that in the little shelf/compartment in the back right. That made the fire extinguisher real snug, and its stability is assisted by my jumper cables right next to it. There's space above the fire extinguisher, so you just lift it up a bit and it comes out over the wood when you need it. I'll modify this post if it doesn't work out OK, but on some initial drives the extinguisher stayed in place just fine. And obviously if your extinguisher is fatter, make the wood piece 2.5" long, or whatever works. Now I'll sand the wood and paint it black...
