Weighing the odds of having to deal with a fire you can't get fairly close to and carrying/mounting the weight of a massive gas bottle somewhere, all things considered? I see what you're saying for sure but ideally none of us will have to find-out the nuances of fighting our own fires if we're careful and mindful.

I seriously considered a CO2 bottle because of the mess ABC consumer units make if it has to be used on the vehicle. Again, weighing cost, maintenance, weight, potential results (or lack thereof) in the event of a fire, etc., etc...

Watched the Jay Leno video and I'm not sure as to just how close one has to be for these to be effective, they seem to throw a lot of results. In my opinion this is the new consumer extinguisher tech in it's infancy.

There's another company making pods that mount under your hood on the sheet metal with sensors that does the same thing "automatically".

A grease or spattering oil fire in the kitchen then sure, nuke it from orbit just to be sure with chemical and anything else by all means. If I can't get close enough to my vehicle for these Elements to be effective, realistically if there isn't a lot more help available and fast, it's all over but the screamin' anyway.

I've been driving all kinds of vehicles in all kinds of environments for over half a century and have never come close to having a fire. Perhaps all the more reason to be prepared for one but let's face it, there's not a lot of vehicles burning down if you use common sense and keep a vehicle in good condition.

It would have been interesting to see Coyote Works' Jeep fire while he was trying to put it out but I can only assume he used a consumer chemical ABC bottle that obviously didn't do a thing... The video is remarkable in many way though as a chronicle of a backcountry vehicle fire. The gent who owns the channel gets all my respect for how he did out there and the lessons he was able to share.

I've plans to mount mine with a homemade behind-the-seat mount (as I never have people in the back seats and don't intent to), will post a little thing if it works the way it should if anyone is interested.

Check-out Coyote Works' catastrophe recently if you haven't seen it. This guy gets full props from me for his actions, conduct and sharing his experience and lessons.

However, it's one of the reasons I began looking for an extinguisher other than a consumer dry chemical bottle which apparently did nothing for this poor guy. I depend on Element now unless someone close has a halo or co2 bottle...

With the modern advent of "insurance", I'd almost rather my wagon burn to the ground rather than have it half-burnt and painted Alpine White Dry Chemical...

Fire Extinguisher Super Simple Mod. I’ve seen all kinds of mountings for Fire Extinguishers but this one couldn’t be simpler. Industrial strength velcro in 2 strips on the Fire extinguisher & placed on the carpet under the rear seat edge. It sticks there like a rock & is contained even if it didn’t, yet it’s easy to get to whenever you need it.

I looked at that mount, but decided on quick fists instead. That mount adds more weight, and looks like it would rattle. The quick fists were also $10

It's right by the shovel, small red cylinder on the right. I guess I should have taken better picture, this one was made last summer when I had to spend a weekend home and didn't have any camping stuff in my trunk.

I ordered the sampler kit off amazon...and the fire extinguisher is the standard kitchen size you get at Home Depot. The quick fists will fit pretty much anything.

i hope this isn't taken the wrong way, but if your engine compartment happens to catch a fire (which i think is why most of us carry an extinguisher) that little thing isnt gonna do squat if it really gets going.
