Firewall flex when clutch is pressed

Greetings,

I have a 2000 4runner 5 speed lately I was having to use clutch start cancel button to start it. Today I decided to check it out and noticed the firewall was flexing as I pressed the clutch, I could feel it moving. My buddy said that maybe the firewall had weakened and that we could weld it to prevent flexing.

Do you have have any advice on how I could fix it?

I would think the more likely cause is a faulty clutch pedal switch.

I had the same problem. I just put a self-adhesive felt furniture bumper on the tab where the switch contact hits. I don't know if my firewall flexes or not. I consider the issue resolved.

I had a problem similar to this one in a 92 Toyota pickup. The reinforcment plate the pedal bolted to cracked and was flexing real bad. Took it all off, welded the crack and fixed.

This isn't mine. He used a clear plastic foot for electronics gear (see link below). Works just as well. Mine was not a defect (I think), but just would never start after I installed a nice new, thick carpet. From day 1 in 1999, you really had to push it to the limit. So much easier now.

so why not bend the bracket?

or better yet, just adjust the switch correctly?

Switch does not adjust. You would have to lengthen the white post somehow. Building up the contact point was clearly easier.

You could bend the tab, which is part of the pedal not the bracket, but why? It's in a hellish difficult spot to even see, let alone get sufficient leverage to bend a pretty beefy tab. This is a ten second, $0.25 fix. But sure, do it your way--there is more than one way to skin a cat. I don't see any way bending the bracket would help, though.
