Hey all, pretty new here and new to T4R ownership! Bought a 98 Limited 4x4 with just 90,000 miles and loving it! So far, I've just done a couple cosmetic upgrades - painted the woodgrain dash & window controls, and plasti-dipped the gold trim emblems on the outside.
Now I'm looking to replace the factory CD player with an aftermarket double DIN unit that allows hands-free bluetooth calling. I've never done a stereo install, so I was planning on having it installed at a local Crutchfield to be sure it was done right, and save the inevitable heartache that always comes up when doing a project myself. After choosing the unit, plus installation, it would cost about $215 to have them install it. I can buy it on Amazon plus wiring for $130.
My main question: how difficult is it for a newbie to do this install? I've already had the dash apart to paint it, so I'm familiar with that process. I'm unfamiliar with all the wiring and connecting the new wiring harness. Additionally, I'm looking to run the bluetooth microphone, and wonder how difficult that will be. I've read that the 3rd gens have a factory amp behind the dash as well, and that it should just be removed when doing this install, is that correct?
Thanks for the advice in advance!
