Hello All,
For all of you tire fanatics out there, I thought I would give my first impressions of the Toyo Open Country HT that I have now ridden on for 3 days. Having previously had the Michelin Cross Terrains and Goodyear Fortera Silent Armors, I will use those for comparisons and will rank on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best.
1. Looks - IMO the Goodyears win hands down. While I wasn't crazy about the tire, they really looked great on the truck, from the lettering to the side profile to the shoulder. The Toyos are definitely more passive looking, and the white lettering is just kind of bland. Goodyear 10; Toyo 6; Michelin NA (no white letters).
2. Ride comfort - The Toyos definitely do NOT give as soft a ride as the Goodyears or even the Cross Terrains. Not as soft but definitely not objectionable. Basically the only thing I've noticed so far is that I can definitely feel road imperfections (cracks, bumps, expansion joints) more in these tires. The Goodyears were the best at blunting these, and Michelins did a good job too.
Goodyear 9; Michelin 9; Toyo 7.
3. Noise comfort - Nice and quiet, on par with the Silent Armors and Cross Terrains. All 3 are relatively quiet and rate a 9.
4. Hydroplaning resistance - here is where the Toyos are superior. I thought the Silent Armors hydroplaned way too easily, and I also wasn't that impressed with the CT's either. The tread patterns of these tires would also seem to indicate that, as the Open Countrys have 2 large grooves. Toyo 10; Michelin 7; Goodyear 4.
5. Price - from what I understand, the CTs are pushing $200 a tire, the Silent Armors are about $160...and the Toyos are about $100 per tire.
Since I got these for free, I cannot comment, but I would be more than willing to buy these as replacements.
The only negative to them when comparing them to the other two is the very slight decrease in ride comfort.
For what it's worth, those are my opinions. I'm sure I will report more in a few weeks or a month.
