First Post/Tire Question

Hello everyone, my name is Zak and I have owned my 2007 V8 Limited for almost 2 years now, and it's time to replace her rubber. It's completely stock (don't plan on keeping it that way). I was wondering if anyone could give me some recommendations in tires that will fit the stock Limited wheel. I drive A LOT (60k in 2 years) mostly nor cal to so cal, but I also want to be able to take it up to Hollister 4wd park, camping, or just hitting some mud every once in a while and not have to worry about getting stuck. I'd also like to stay around $1k. Any suggestions would be great. I'm coming from a long line of sports cars, so 4wd tires are a whole new ball game to me. Any suggestions would be great

Sounds like you're looking more all-terrain than mud terrain. I'd recommend the BFG AT or Firestone AT for mostly street use or the Kelly Safari TSR for slightly more agressive tread than that. I have those and love them... quiet yet agressive. The Goodyear Duratrac is just about the same tire but costs about $50/tire more... both made by Goodyear.

I installed the Michelin LTX A/T2 in November and have now had them in snow and mud and they perform fantastic. Great on wet pave also. Quiet and feel great on road - they do pick up gravel if you drive a lot on gravel roads. Toyo dealer had a buy 3 and 1 free deal and I also got a Michelin $70 rebate also. The dealer price per tire was the same as Costco and installation was like $5 more per tire so saved $220. I have always gone with a more aggessive tire - last 4 sets of 4x4 tires were the BFG AT KO - these seem pretty good and quieter.

My buddy has some BFG A/Ts, and those were my first choice, however, every tire shop I go to they tell me that that tire wont fit the stock wheel. -__-

Everyone has their own opinion about tires and I do too. A good recommendation is the tire I am currently running, Falken Rocky Mountain ATS from Discount Tire (also called Wild Peak AT). They provide an excellent and quiet ride on the highway and offers good traction in mud and snow. The cost was not all that great either when I bought them in July, my out the door price at DT was $635 for P265/70R17. Looking at Discount Tire online the prices have dramatically increased to $181/tire but I would still recommend them based on my experience.

Other good tires to consider are the Nitto Terra Grapplers, Hankook DynaPro ATm and Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo 2 (I owned the Revos on my '97 Jeep GC).

I understand that the BFG AT 265 70 17 in a stock Gen 4 4R will rub the liner and mud flaps at full turn. There are trimming and moving solutions somewhere in the Forum.

-Are you interested in going a tire size bigger?
-And you always have to worry about getting stuck. If you play hard, it will happen. Bring a friend with a snatch strap

Are the Limited rims 17 or 18's?

A 265/70/17 are a little bit taller, and as an AT without the big side lugs of an MT may fit with no lift, or moderate lift or leveling kit up front.

07 Limited would be 18's. For the most tire options, consider 275/65/18. All good suggestions so far, just depends on if you want to cater towards more on road or more off road.

The Hankook ATM's were mentioned, so I'll throw in my opinion. I've had them for 30k miles, still at half tread or more. They've help up great. However, their performance has significantly decreased. Mine are horrible if the roads are wet. I've got to ease on the brakes or it feels like I'm on ice. They've also gotten very loud (at least IMO for an AT tire). They're much louder than the Firestone Destination AT's my dad runs, and almost as loud as the Toyo Open Country MT's my uncle runs. The only difference is with the ATM's the noise is mostly between 30-50 mph. They do quiet down some at slower/higher speeds. I wouldn't recommend them, too many other good options out there.

I would go with a more tame AT unless you want to replace tires every two years or so.

Like previously mentioned the Nitto TerraGrappler or Michelin LTX AT2 would be a good place to start.

I am on a second set of Bridgestone Revo's and am very happy with them. They are an AT and perform well in all conditions. First set was good for 60K miles. They are also quiet on the road which is a plus.

You might want to start by considering whether to choose passenger (P) or Light Truck (LT), especially since you do so much highway driving. Among other things, choosing LT would be an expensive proposition putting in those kind miles.

It sounds like an all-terrain (A/T) tire is where you're headed. Best thing for mud is to try to avoid it. An AT will work better than stock, of course, but not great. There is a mud terrain tire category (M/T) but the list of compromises involved is a long one, especially for someone driving 30k miles per year.

FYI, Consumer Reports recently published a comprehensive tire test report, available online. Matching your driving with the A/Ts in that report, it appears to me you'd have a hard time beating Hankook Dynapro ATM.
