First time off road

So, I went off roading in Sierra, Ca the other day for the first time in my 2001 4runner. I must say I was very please with the performance I received. I was wondering though, when driving on terrain like I was where it was mainly trails but a lot of switch between down grades and up grades and pretty intense hills and dips do you think its a good idea to keep it in low? I did that for the most part and I felt like I had good power everywhere and I also didn't have to brake to much to slow down. we were driving probably between 20 & 30 miles an hour, Slowing down for real sharp turns and crazy dips and what not. Do any of you know the area where I went off roading?

the sierras are a big area in CA, i grew up in nor cal in the napa valley but would spend most of my summers packpacking and wheeling in the tahoe and yosemite areas and the winters skiing in tahoe. you have to be more specific about where you were.
yeah low range is best and optimal for steep hills both up and down, and for you being new to offroading in your runner id suggest you keep it in low range till you get used to the truck and how it handles ect. they are great rigs off road keep it up and get out more, just dont get in over your head

does he mean low gear or 4-wd low? cruising in 1st and 2nd is good for steep hills but you shouldn't be in 4wd low for just normal logging trails and dirt roads , i mean you can be but it's over kill and a waste of gas.....what do you really mean here?
