first time timing belt change

im goin to do a timing belt change on my 3vze and its going to my first time doing it so iv got a hans manual to show me how to do it but does any one have any tips n tricks that would make it easier. today i replaced the crank seal and i didn't put the belt on right so the timing is off and it won't start and theres a ticking noise then its turning over.

Holy crap, tell me this is a joke thread....

I believe that's an interference motor. That ticking could be a valve and piston coming together....a very bad thing

a 3vze is a non interference. i tried to get the belt as close as i possibly can back to its original position but obviously failed.

No harm no foul ticking is probably just spark plugs firing at the wrong time. Put the crank on tdc mark and then take the belt off and put the cams on their tdc marks. Put the tensioner on and turn it over by hand until the timing marks match and if the do then put it all together and fire her up. And if they are off just repeat first steps. Just take your time and then once it's running take a timing light and set the distributor to spec

thanks for the info tomorrow ill do it and ill update on the status

Your kind of being an ass he's right it's non interference and there's a .00001% that something is so wrong internally and not his fault that it's a valve. The 4.7 is interference tho

He said he pulled the timing belt to replace the crank seal, put it back together and now ticks during turning over. I've lost tbelts on interference motors, and this very thing has happened to me.

Someone declared it was not an interference motor, so I asked what the ticking would be. How the hell is that being an ass??

In practice, you need to be careful when playing with valve timing. That's the moral of the story.

ok so im alining the cam shaft sprockets and the one on the left isn't even close to alined. iv did 2 full revolutions and still nothing. heres some pics that show hof fare away the white marks are. i can aline the marks and get it to stay but on the right side i can aline the marks when the spring releases and it automatically alines its self.

I'm no expert so maybe I'm not getting it but I believe your problem is you have slack on both sides of your belt when you're releasing the tensioner. You should line up all 3 marks, run your belt across both cams and under the top pulley with no slack. Then put it around your water pump and the crank again still with no slack. The belt should line up with the notches on the crank pulley. So from your left cam sprocket (looking at the front of the motor from in front of the motor), under the idler pulley, around the right cam sprocket, around the water pump and finally around the crank there should be no slack. All slack should be on the tensioner side between the left cam (again standing in front of the motor) to the crank. Slowly release the tensioner and viola!! Everything should be hunky dory.

Take a 17 mm socket and ratchet and bring both cams to the marks straight up and same with the crank mark Then put the belt on

Quick question.. Does it matter which way the cam sprockets face when installing them? I am on middle of a timing belt change and noticed my sprockets facing different as you can see from the photo.

It does matter but I believe yours are wrong. Here's a picture of mine. Sorry it's sideways. What year is yours?

Its a 1991. I've seen them so many different ways I am not sure what's right. Even on the Haynes book they are different on a couple their pictures.
