first wheeling trip

Hey guys,

This Sunday, me and my friends are going wheeling in Tahoe..

This is my first wheeling trip of the year and I was wondering what I would need. The trails I be hitting is Eagle Lake and Signal Creek..

So far, I have 2 tow straps, a rear D-Ring, front hook..

I know I'm missing a air compressor in there and I was wondering what would you guys recommend.. the little co2 ones or someone like an arb one?

What else would I need? I don't want to stuck out on the trail and not be able to come home...

Anything I should check prior to the run? oil? or etc?

Yank your spare from underneath and toss it in the cargo area. That way you won't bump it or pop it and you'll still have it just in case.

Not sure what you mean. In any case, a CO2 Compressor with far pass a small air compressor to fill up your tires.

If your friends are experienced wheelers, LISTEN TO YOUR SPOTTER!!! But if you dont feel it and your spotter does, simply back out! I've done that plenty of times, it does not reflect you as a person.

Bring a couple D Rings if you can. You can never go short of them. I once got stuck where we had to use 3 straps and every one of our D Rings. You can not have enough. I now carry 8. One in the rear wont make a difference.

Other than that. HAVE FUN!!

I forgot to mention the MOST important.

Bring water and food.

I have been stuck with 6 rigs before and unable to get out until 9 pm and by then all of us were dehydrated and hungry. Since then, I have not traveled without, at least, a days worth of food. You NEVER know what may happen.

Also, bring essential tools. Think to yourself, "if i blow a tire, what will I need."

I also still bring oil with me JUST IN CASE

What I meant was, should I go for the ones that runs on the co2 cartridges or the ones like the arb ones..

I'm trying to find a spotter for Sunday.. maybe ask the girlfriend if she wants to come along for the ride and check out the scenery of Tahoe..

What D-Rings would you recommend?

Should I go for some dry food from REI or some Mre's? which ones do you pack?

I will most likely bring my surefire and benchmade with me in case if I do see a bear or a deer..

or should I bring my Remington with me... :jump:

CO2 Is the way to go!! Those Air compressors can be pretty slow. But there is away to integrate both. But I just carry around a CO2 tank and fill up that way.

No offense to your gf but what i mean by spotter is someone who is REALLY knowledgeable when it comes to wheeling. Someone who can look at a truck, pick the right line, and if he/she sees its not working tell the driver to back off and go another way. Not just someone who says "You're looking good, you're looking good, WAIT WAIT" and you're flopped.

I mostly pack a few sandwiches made in the morning for the trip and then i do pack enough for 3 days worth. Thats dry food, water, clif bars, power bars, MRE's, etc. Anything to survive.

Pack like your others forgot something.

Tissue Paper?
Fire wood?
Water Purifying?

I'm an Eagle Scout so I pack for the extreme but if you're going to a spot where you're close to town, some of these things you dont need.

I also think one of the best things you can have off roading is a CB. Whether its in your truck or just handheld, those can also call for help when you're in a ditch.

As you said in your first post, you and a few friends, are going. Just look out for each other, play it safe, and dont try things that you're uncomfortable with.

Just wanted to clarify something. I carry around a 20 lb tank of CO2. Now this last me awhile so make sure if you take CO2 you get enough where you can air up as many times as you want. If you dont know how many times you're going to air up maybe a 50 dollar air compressor isn't out of the question. Also forgot to mention the shackles. 3/4" shackles are good D-Rings to have. Such as this: Amazon.com: Smittybilt 13047B 3/4" Black D-Ring: Automotive

How much did the co2 tank ran you?

I totally understand, I don't want my next post to be like ' I flipped my runner over the weekend' or something along that area...

I was hoping if she would like to go check out the scenery with me since Tahoe is going to be snowing this weekend..

You can always go in prepared for the worst, if not.. it just sits there..

As of tonight, we are about 6 strong. 3 disco's, 2 runners and a taco..

I would like to purchase a cb in the future as soon as so cash frees up..

Have a plan B and plan on it not working either.
Plan for everything going wrong and breaking at the same time.
Plan for being stuck over night in the cold.
Tell people where you will be and when you plan to be back.
Go slow and use common sense.
Bring a shovel , and gloves, and make sure your buddy has his own shovel.
Dont try to "be cool" and bust your truck on a stupid little rock crawling photo shoot

Correct, those hooks give a lot and turn into flying missiles. Heard stories of them flying forward and hitting and shattering the back window.
