FJ80 Rear Shock Input Please

Thanks HiLuxSurf. There is a guy selling his stock setup for a great deal and I am tired of the saggy rear end. Just thought that I would replace it all with his stock equipment.

there was a post in another thread that the rear coils give a slight amount of lift but can't remember the lift amount, iirc, it was somewhere between 1" and 2".

if you decide to get the stock setup, could post the compressed and extended lengths of the rear shocks as well as the part number?

I have the sonoran steel 1.2 rear only on order. matching it with King CO's up front. later if i want to upgrade the shock and keep the LC80 coils, what would be a good upgrade? Say I want to run King 2.0's would I order them for the LC80? Or should I fab a mount / custom shock etc? anyone done this?

Man, that sounds miserable. I'm sure you've got your eye on nice adjustable coilovers, but I honestly can't recommend '99 tall coils with Tundra 5100 enough. My front end is so cush. For $300 total, you can't beat it. It's all preference- well, and driving style/terrain- but I like a soft, controlled ride. My 4Runner rides incredibly well and comfy to me.

The more I drive my wife's stock Tacoma they more I want that nice ride. Her truck floats over speed bumps. Mine jumps them. Lol.

I'm tellin ya man. I used to go slow over speed bumps. Now I fkn BOMB them, and my suspension just eats em up. Buttery-smooth. I really love my whole setup so much. Just need to find the best rear shocks. Bombing the long, low freq speed bumps caused the rear to compress more than I'd like. I'm hoping a progressive, tighter valved shock will fix that. And I'm even talking about the huge 8" tall, 18" long speed bumps we have at Costco- the faster I go, the softer it is!

Might be one of my posts you're thinking of. It gives 1-2" rake, and handles AWESOME. [MENTION=155898]Hoffie[/MENTION] I fully recommend the 5th gen rear coils for the rear of a "stock" height 3rd gen. The shocks may be a little long- you would have to put the shocks on and go full-bump to make sure the shocks don't bottom-out before your bumps hit. Here is my '97 with '14 rear coils(stock '01 front suspension)-

The driveway slope might encourage the rake a little. It sat a little less raked on flat ground. Super good setup for the occasional camping trips and utility trailer towing without riding on bump stops like the stock coils would be!

I have the set up you have in order. I think you will be plenty happy with it as is. I enjoy mine quite a bit. And at some point, you are getting into diminishing returns territory. Then you have to ask if that money is better spent somewhere else.

I will be changing the rear coils to the 861s to accommodate the additional weight of my swing out, but I have enjoyed the Tokico shocks with the LC 7 wraps for sure.

Also, it is worth noting that several people running some sort external reservoir system, (King, Icon and perhaps others), have had clearance issues where the shocks come into contact with the vehicle. That's a headache I can live without.

Tyler James, I have the same color 4Rnr, but my paint job has the Arizona faded look. I hope that I get that much of a lift out of the TE coils. I am currently riding on the bump stops at every ripple in the road.

Isn't it horrible?! I don't know how anyone can drive a 4Runner with clapped out coils like that. When I got my '01, I drove it around the neighborhood a few times. Just driving around the neighborhood, I was certain someone had swapped out the coils for wood blocks. Weird part is, it didn't even look like it sat them at low! But looking under it, there was only about 1/2" before the progressive bump made contact with the pad on the axle. I think you'll love the 5th gen rear coils. I had the stock '01 Tokicos paired with them, and it was great.
Regretfully, I never even took good pictures of the '01 before I swapped the suspension from my '97 onto it, but you can still see how the rear didn't seem to sit too low.
To me, this looks not too saggy, but was HORRIBLE to drive-

I installed those 2011 Trail Edition rear coils and shocks on my '98. Smoother ride now with 1.5" lift to what my saggy originals were at. The coils are fatter in diameter than stock and shorter, too. Stiffer than stock and provides a better ride. My original KYB's were still in good condition, but I went ahead and installed the TE shocks with the coils.

How did you seat the new Trail coils in the '98 perch? I just tried to do this today and the Trail coils were too wide for the perch and it wouldn't seat snugly like the 3rd gen coil did. I thought it was a safety issue so I just put the 3rd gen coil back in. Talk about a wasted afternoon.

Hi there, can anyone confirm that the 33-187174 is a direct replacement? I've done my due diligence and there were a handful of posts that indicated that the upper mounting hardware (washers and bushings) may not be an exact match for the 3rd Gen 4Runner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you get them from Wheeler’s or SS they are (from experience) but I do believe they change out the hardware so it is a direct bolt on application. I don’t THINK that they are originally made to be a direct bolt on fit for 3rd gens but I have not bought them from places like amazon to know for sure. SS only sells those shocks as part of his lift kit but you can get it individually through Wheeler’s, just be sure to specify it’s for the 3rd gen.

You may need a set of these - 3/4" shock bushings

The lower perch that fits onto the axle.

This isn’t an intentional diss on Toytec but I don’t know that I’ve ever gotten a definitive answer from them anytime I called with a question.
