Finally got around to painting my TE wheels for my SR5! Did a low gloss black and finished it off with a flat clear. Didn't upgrade to the 275s, decided to wait til I get a the toytec ultimate lift and get 285s. This will do for now. :thumb3:
~DIY~
Supplies:
-2 Cans of low gloss Duplicolor Engine paint.
-1 can of Krylons flat general purpose clear coat.
-2 cans Duplicolor General purpose primer (just make sure it bonds with metal)
-320 grit sandpaper
-acetone
-safety gloves
-rag
-Respirator face mask (you don't need it, but I suggest you go buy one so you don't die lol, about $25 at walmart)
-Safety glasses
Step 1~ Easiest way to do it is have your tire off the wheels (bought mine on ebay so they were shipped w/o tires). But if you do have the tires on, you can always do the index card trick. Stick index cards inbetween the tire and rim and mask it off. Wear all necessary safety gear before doing work.
Step 2~Get some 320 grit sandpaper and sand every wheel down. Even the area for the lugs. Take your time and get every crevice.
Step 3~After done sanding, grab a rag and some acetone and wipe the wheels clean.
Step 4~Lightly spray a coat of the primer, covering the whole wheel. I did each wheel individually, instead all 4 at 1 time. But I waited about 15 mins inbetween coats. Do a second a coat. Then when thats done, you can do this if you want, I did the inner barrels too, same method.
Step 5~When thats all dry, make sure their aren't any runs or bubbles in the primer. If their are, then grab some sand paper and sand it down. Next is the actual paint, use the same method as above, but wait 30 mins inbetween coats.
Step 6~ Next is the clear, same method as the painting stage.
Step 7~ Repeat everything above for the center caps, its not tricky, just lay them out, sand them and spray them down.
Step 8~ Let these dry for more than 1 day, I was too excited to put them on and mounted them the next day and now the paints peeling a little on the edge.
