Flat cargo area with tie downs and storage

My lift is on back order so in the meantime I'm moving on to mod #2. A custom built flat cargo platform with flush mounted l-track tie down rails and integrated storage.

This involved drilling 6 holes in my week old 4RUNNER.

Are you removing that carpet area and putting some sound insulation material?

I remove the two inches of styrofoam but will reuse the carpet and sound insulation

I've been thinking about doing something very similar to this. Are you trying to keep it flush with the rest of the back? That's what I wanted to do but unsure how much depth is actually there. Is it usable storage?

Yes, it's going to be flush with the seats when they are folded down. The seats are at a slight angle and the load floor will match that angle.

It looks like there will be about 4-5 inches of storage by the seats and down to about 2 1/2 inches by the rear door.

It doesn't sound like much but it will store most of my recovery gear and EDC stuff out of site and mind.

I've been thinking about doing something very similar to this. Are you trying to keep it flush with the rest of the back? That's what I wanted to do but unsure how much depth is actually there. Is it usable storage?

Here is a sketch of the surface area I plan to cut up. If I wasn't adding the storage underneath it would be a lot simpler, but I cant be satisfied knowing there is a bunch of wasted space down there.

I might do carbon fiber as well if I had those skills. But hardwood plywood is remarkably strong and durable as a load surface. I'm curious to see what this weighs when I'm done.

Doors are rough cut. I have some calculations to do on the doors to make sure they fit because I'm going to line-x the whole unit so don't mind the gaps around the doors. If anything I'm worried it will be too tight when line-x is added into the mix.

I'm planning to doing something similar when I get home but I plan to use fiberglass and wood for the frame and storage compartment. I'll use a wood lid and I'm still trying to decide if I want to use a hinge or not.

Yeah I haven't decided what I'm going to do for hinges yet. I don't want the panels free floating. I'll keep the dogs back there and wouldnt want a panel or gear to pop out if I hit a bump or when off road. I guess I need some kind of latch too. Have to make this up as I go along.

Yes that's very helpful! Thank you for the link. I like how he did his. Mine is going to be a bit slimmer by the back door but the principle is very much the same.

Test fit. Figured out the linex will be about 1/8 inch so had to countersink the doors to account for the two layers of extra linex. That's why they sit low in these pictures. Once linex is applie they should be pretty close to flush. This isn't bolted to the truck in this picture. Once secured it will sit about 1/2 inch lower.

Also picked out some hinges and handles. Should be here by end of week so I can get it sprayed and installed.
