Flat cargo area with tie downs and storage

Great pics and ideas. I have been looking for a custom auto shop to do something like this for me and they keep saying "tell me exactly what you want". So I need to draw it out for them but I can't draw.

Wondering what people are doing if they take out the bottom seats too? Anything different? Building removable compartments for that space? Covering the whole floor with a panel up to the back of the front seats?

I'm building something almost identical to this, only I'm using 3/4" baltic birch ply for the frame rails and my storage area closest to the seats will be a single piece.


If you don't mind helping me out... How did you mount the L track since the 2x4 is really only 1-1/2 and the track is 1-1/8 - how did you have room to mount the L track and room to attach the top sheet to the rails?

if you look closely in this image

you can see that there are two layers of ply. So there are the 2x4 that are through bolted to the truck body. On top of that there is a plywood base that is almost a half sheet of plywood with the holes for the doors cut out. Then there is a second layer of ply on top of that that is the doors and the material surrounding the doors. The tie down alumininum rails are screwed through 1 layer of ply and the 2x4.

Yes, I cut to size. The aluminum is soft and I cut it with a sharp compound miter saw with a wood blade. As long as the work is secured, and you have good eye and skin protection, it cuts through it like butter. Be safe.

No problem. I did hate to give up that space on the side. I placed the 2x4 over the body reinforcement plates for secure bolting. I originally planned to have them at the far edges of the area but felt 1 layer of sheet metal might tear out in a crash. With my placement of the 2x4 it made the usable space on the sides minimal since it starts to roll up toward the wheel well.

One other thing to consider, that I ran across in my design. My original design was like his with a single big door to access the storage. But it's very common for me to have stuff in the back of the truck and it's way easier to shift it to one side or even lift one side of the cargo up to access the individual small doors. Otherwise, I'd have to empty the cargo area each time I wanted to get in there.

My plan is to have three doors. One behind the seats that runs the width. Then two just like yours closer to the door.
I would basically be knocking off your design unless I can extend it all the way to the sides. We'll see...

I already have the cardboard templates cut if I want to do it just like yours. Just need to wrap my brain around moving it out a few more inches but your point about the rigidity of where you put your rails makes a lot of sense.

I'm also researching what I want as a floor liner as I'm not using the carpet. I've already put butyl sound deadening down and I'm considering this as the final layer:

Just need to decide if I want to put it in after the install or before. Leaning to after. If I do it similar to yours I'll stuff the dead space on the sides with the remainder of this roll.

I've finally built my version of this and I'm ready to do the line-x but have one quick question if you're still around.
How much of a gap did you leave on the door edges to accommodate for the thickness of the line-x paint?

EDIT: I just found where you said 1/8" all around.

Here are the final pics! It has worked out PERFECT!!! I love it. Have carried all kinds of things back there. Most often an engel 45 and my bikes.
