If the road-hazard coverage doesn't work out (I know my dealer offers it as part of bringing in your car for routine servicing), definitely check out whatever remedy you can claim from your Department of Transportation.
In my state, there is a form that you need to complete, along with whatever supporting evidence you can provide (i.e. pictures). You do need to submit the cost of repairs (so you need to pay for them upfront), but given how long the claims process is, you wouldn't want to wait anyway.
There have been articles in our local paper about the thousands of dollars paid out in claims (usually when people start complaining about our pothole problem). I think it's worth a shot, especially given that you have pretty good evidence that your damage was caused by something that shouldn't have come loose.
