flexplate nightmare!

How is it failing? It's cracking? Bending? Teeths get broken?

mine went out at around 180k, due to a bad remaned starter
lost 2 teeth, replaced the flexplate and starter with a used OEM ones, hopefully these will last a while

well Doc You're lucky you've never had a problem with one..this is the third one that I know of in this vehicle.. second since I've owned it.I have a good Bosch starter,the flexplate is OEM bolts OEM, its a daily driver, nothing lifted, not a Stumpjumper and doesn't get abused.my dad is a pro mechanic and I helped with the install so I witnessed the work getting done correctly.he and I are just both totally baffled at why it keeps occurring when everything stays properly maintained and has been installed correctly.when you talk to Toyota all they say is "make sure it's a new flexplate that you installed and that you used Toyota bolts for the flexplate" that's all they've got, they have nothing else as a solution.to me those bolts alone should not make the difference when everything's properly torqued.the bolts we took out of the flexplate and torque converter this time around were just as tight as the day they were installed.:redbrick:

OEM OEM OEM.
I know I posted my flexplate is good but just noticed a noise last night. Jumped under truck and I can hear a pretty bad noise coming from flexplate area. Dont make sounds at idle but does when revving. Sucks because it has to happen when its getting cold.

Again, OEM.
There's something you need to know about the 4Runner:
It HATES anything NON-OEM.
Spark Plugs, ONLY NGK or DENSO.
02/AF Sensor, DENSO
Parts, ONLY OEM STUFF.
Oil, doesn't really matter, but PARTS need to be OEM.
These things will run with NON-OEM, but they HATE IT.
And Thank You. Wouldn't give it up for anything.

yes I have found that to be true with other parts also. was pretty sure you would suggest OEM starter but I would have been an idiot not to ask! that's how you learn stuff right;-)
so I wonder what the big difference is between how the oem vs "other" starters affect the flexplate ? i understand how they engage the flexplate etcetera..but I wonder what it is about the non-oem starter that causes the flexplate to crack ....any thoughts?

The slightest thing being off will cause that thing to break.
It constantly rotating, and the forces on it are pretty extreme.
Just it being unbalanced can cause it.
The starter not being shimmed right, close enough for their specs, but not Toyota specs, ect. There's a million things.

well. You don't happen to have a starter laying around do you...what sites would you suggest I search for an OEM starter? just do not want to go to the dealership and buy one and you know as well as I do that some of these sites that are selling OEM parts are iffy.you're being a great help by the way I do appreciate your input.
