Well it's only monday at work and I'm already working on a cup of coffee and a red bull. Still feel like I need more caffeine!!!
 
Complacency. I have been guilty of this as well. when I am out alone i.e without wife or kids but with a buddy or two. Past Saturday was up on t33 trail in Boulder rated difficult (5-5) but a fun trail which I have done twice before but at an off camber section, no spotter the rear passenger wheel came up suddenly about 2 feet and the front driver side took a nose dive and surprised me cause I wasn't expecting it. I had not disconnected the sway bar links this time which I had done on previous trips. Needless to say but disconnected the sway bar links and all was well and had a great day.
 
A lot of trails in socal (that are close to the city) are like this now.....its just too many people, and mistakes happen.

It's a risk like with anything. The issue is that a mistake can cost a lot (yourself and the car). Just take things slow. I've only been at this for a few years but through experience have learned quite a bit. If you're new to this keep the truck stock for a while besides some rock sliders, skids, and tires. Take it on forest service trails, dirt roads. Then progress to harder terrain as you go. The good news is that you live in Colorado. You have UNLIMITED trail access from beginner to advanced to hard core. I suggest picking up Charles Wells book. You get a list of trails, maps, points of interests, and descriptions of the trail with certain obstacles and difficulty level.

Just be careful, this forum and the 4Runner are a HUGE time suck and money pit. Have fun.

Those are great books! I have their California and Utah ones too. I always keep them in the car as you never know where youll end up on a spontaneous road trip lol

As mentioned, buy the Wells books and read carefully the introductions as well. They really do have all the techniques you actually need short of hardcore trails.

Then start from the green Wells trails, which range from dirt roads to trails that will seriously push most crossovers. Then get to moderate, blue trails. These often feature milder versions of what you will find on reasonable difficult trails as well.

Wells subdivides (look at the symbols) the difficult trails into such suitable for stock vehicles and such that he thinks are not. Of course, he is a bit conservative in that assessment but that is a good thing.

Remember that trails can change all the time. His CO books (2 for the state) are brand new and he has a new AZ book coming out early next year.

I hope his insurance coverage carries off road damage. Many find out they dont have the coverage until it is too late. Hard to get the law out there to do and collision report. My most extreme off road would be the beach or some really lite trails. No way would I take a fairly new TRD on a serious trail, but thats me. Mileage varies.
