Flowmaster.....?

Super

New member
I was looking at the flowmaster mufflers and I could use some help from the "muffler veterans." I see a lot of recommendations for the super44, but on their website it seems that that is a "very aggressive" tone. I don't want anything that will be extraordinarily loud, something say 30-50% louder than the stock exhaust sound is it. Any suggestions?

Chaz, yes I did have a previous post on making it louder, but I talked to some people who said it would make the exhaust LOUD. I just want to hear when I turn my car on. Ill check out those 50,60, and 70's.
MikesToy, what is a resonator and how do I take it out?
Thanks for the replies.

Do you have a 4th gen? The resonator looks like a bombshell at the end of your tailpipe. You need to take it to a welding shop or muffler shop to get it out.

Based on what you described you should be looking at the 50 Series SUV muffler. It seems as though it would be right up your alley. If you want more volume than that you could toto the 40 series or you could be quieter by going to the 70 series which is barely louder than stock.

At the same time you do the muffler have the resonator removed and add a slightly larger tip than your pipe size to mello the tone.

I just ordered a 70 series that I'll have installed late this week. I'll pick up a weld on tip locally of the 3" sort to weld where the resonator was. It will exit behind the rear tire when it's done.

If your heart is not set on flowmaster, dynomax makes a relatively short super turbo muffler that sounds just like the TRD exhaust. I can get you part nos when I'm not on my itouch.

Just remember if you're just replacing the OE muffler, you want a center in / offset out design so that factors into which part no. you order.

The 50 series Flowmaster in this config is 52557, not sure of the 40 series, you can look it up online though.
The quieter 70 series is the 52572, but this is too quiet for your taste.

To follow up on my Dynomax info....

The quietest super turbo is the longest one, part number 17748. The shell is 20" long so it has quite the deadening to it. Here is a sound clip (the after clip) that a Tacoma guy did...
Dynomax Super Turbo Flow Muffler (17748) - YotaTech Forums
I think thats too quiet for you.

The shorter one is louder, haven't found a sound clip of it but the part no. is 17733. It's only 14" shell so it doesn't have the deadening ability. Super Turbos flow well and can be had on the cheap if price is a sticking point for you. I'd say that this muffler is probably on par with the 50 series flowmaster volume wise.

Also, if you go the Dynomax route, remember this.....they're packed with fiberglass matting for deadening ability. This stuff will wear out over time/mileage and the volume will continue to increase as the muffler gets older.

I was debating between Flowmasters and Magnaflows. I'm leaning a bit more towards the Magnaflows. Does anyone know what size tips would look best? I'm currently stuck between 3" and 3.5" tips. Any opinions? Sorry if this is thread jacking...

I will check out the dynomax; thanks for all of that information McInnis, that was a real help.
Mikes Toy, there has to be some side effect of removing the resonator other than sound. Right?
and Maaaaartin, no worries. We are all here to learn. :)

When you put a V shaped wall in the path of the exhaust, it causes more back pressure than stock in most cases.

This tricks the driver into thinking he has more power by making the low rpm response feel quicker.

As the rpm's increase, so does the backpressure. Magnaflow and Borla at least decrease as the rpm's increase.

check out this thread when you have time.

Here is what the flowmaster 50 series suv muffler sounds like. I installed it with a K&N CAI.
