Focal IS 690TOY Front Speakers Designed for Toyota

Has anyone used these as a factory upgrade for the non-JBL head unit? Is it worth the price? I was reading the thread about upgrading the dash speakers and was searching Sonic Electronix for prices and there was a comment there about a FJ owner who used these speakers. I looked up the numbers and found 2 different styles on crutchfield.

$299 Focal IS 690TOY - component speaker system with crossover, plugs that you disconnect from your Toyota's speakers plug right into your new Focal woofer and tweeter — no wiring cutting required.

$279 Focal IC 690TOY - 6"x9" 2-way speakers designed to fit select Toyotas.

That's alot of money for speakers so I wanted to check here to see if anyone has used them on their 5th Gen with the factory head unit and no digital processor or amp added.

i dont have these, but in my experience Focal speakers are pretty awesome. I had them in my previous vehicle and they were amazing. They were amped though. I dont know how much of a difference that makes.

I wouldn't without pushing more power to them. Most of the nice speakers want and need more power than the stock hu can give it all by itself. Those plus an appropriate amp would probably be out of this world.

I really like the idea of this. I have slaughtered a few car interiors in far years past doing audio upgrades and frankly, unless I am paying $10K+ forget about doing any of that again. This seems like a holy grail for a simple mid-power system. Any thoughts? I mean selling come time to see if you still want it unplug and run.

Does anyone know the output from the factory entune system (non jbl). I'm assuming somewhere along the lines of 25 watts a channel.

Focal lists the specs at 2-75 watts, so it would technically be fine on the stock head unit, but would undoubtedly sound better with more power.

Yeah undoubtably they would sound better but isn't the factory 2ohms and the Focal 4ohms? It is just for a single pair for $300, I mean that is a relatively (higher end of the middle ground) expensive set of speakers, I would certainly consider some like what I listed above.

I bet that the factory wattage is more than likely peak and not RMS. I could be wrong of course, I can't f'n find any real spec for "Entune Premium Audio with Navigation" systems.

Do they make a Match specifically for the 4Runner? I have a Helix DSP and absolutely love it. It must be tuned manually and requires separate amps but is super flexible and quiet. The Match series is a little bit of a compromise. It's pre-tuned and does not have as much degree of adjustments but should do a great job of improving the 4Runner's sound. The built-in amp won't give you headbanging power but adequate power and very clean sound for most people.

The Focals look pretty interesting. Easy install (although making your own mounting plates is very easy) and Focal has a good reputation. I'd go with the IS (separate tweeter). Tweeter in dash, mid in door and you are done (if you are not picky or a so called audiophile).

IC would put full range in door and then you still need to deal with the dash speakers.

If all you did was replace the stock speakers with the IS690 (no MatchDSP), I guarantee you will still have a significantly better than stock sound. The Toyota speakers are a weak point. Add the Match and you will be amazed!

Well as I understand from what little I have read about that unit, PP 82DSP, it is a programmable DSP (i.e. you can use their software and a laptop+microphone setup to tune it) and 8 channel amplifier in one. They say they have a compatible wire harness for 4runner.

I certainly wouldn't expect bolt rattling power from anything like that merely a nice boost in quality and sound. The factory speakers flatten out in the lows and get mushy right at the volume I like to listen too.

I guess Helix changed their marketing a bit. Match is not "pre-tuned". Just no cut harnesses are vehicle specific. I noticed it outputs 55 watts per channel at 4 ohms. Pretty damn good for an all-in-one. If you get a Match, might want to look at different speakers and do a full active setup. The Focals would work but I like to get a wider range to the dash speakers but mids or co-axials that fit are pretty limited.

Also note that you would need to get an RTA app and calibrated microphone to get best results in tuning.

They are much clearer and cleaner with no distortion whatsoever. This has satiated my appetite for audio in the 4Runner for now. The install was very straightforward. Hmmmm, these look interesting. But I'll put money that these are the lower model of focals marked up cause its a direct fit for toyota's. If your not a "audiophile" but want to upgrade your system with ease, these would be it. You would still need an amp to drive these to full potential, plus you would still need to seal your doors and treat it with sound deadening to get everything out of them. If you don't mind buying mounting brackets or fabricating your own, I think for $299 you can get a better set of components, or even some raw drivers if your using a dsp or a HU with tuning abilities. All of this is just my opinion though, since I've never heard these in person.

Which also makes me think. Will we be seeing Focals as stock speakers for the higher end models of Toyota/Lexus in the future?

I actually have been looking into potential group buy candidates for audio/entertainment upgrades, but haven't see anything too suitable to execute one. Too many choices, too many variables, I can't find one good, easy, affordable, all-in-one solution that I can recommend yet.

The basic. The '14-'15 Trails only come with basic. JBL is only in the Limited.
