Focal IS 690TOY Front Speakers Designed for Toyota

I replaced the front and rear doors with the focals, and the lift gate I used a much cheaper set of speakers that could hand the same rms as the rear doors (think it was a cheap set of focals as well). The front door speakers I believe have a built in crossovers for the tweeters, no bass blocker needed.

I did not want to mess with separating wires and having to run wires throughout the truck back to the lift gate since speakers were in series. I used a reverse harness behind the head unit down to a JL Audio XD 400 (70 watts RMS) through speed wire and back up to head unit to another harness. This way the set up is completely reversible just unplug the extra harnesses and reconnect if I ever want to remove the gear. Works great and there was no cutting of any factory wiring. To me the extra $80 spent on the lift gate speakers was worth the time saved in not running all new wiring to the back.

If I remember correctly there was one extra wire that was missing out of the added harnesses for stereo lighting that I had to re-pin.

While this was all a huge improvement over factory, I still felt it needed help and I installed the FIX 86 before the amp to flatten the signal from the stock head unit, and I was then satisfied.

My 4runner is the SR5 w/ nav and I must say the initial improvement even without an amp or other speakers, is worth it. My front stage sounds much more full. There could be more low end and i am still missing some mid but there is improvement overall. Excited to see how these really perform with a proper amp and sound deadening.

As a side note if anyone knows a good rear door speaker or amp, please recommend.

I wanted to add that putting the door panels back on is hard, but there is a trick.

Instead of trying to hook the top part into the door laboriously, actually pop out that top part of the panel and hook it into the door first. Then the top part of the panel snaps back in by just pushing straight in, just like the bottom part.

With this method, I was able to replace the second door in like 3 minutes.

That's a great tip! I'm digging into mine soon to install some infinity speakers (6x9's for the front doors and 6.5's in the rear doors) with adapters. Used the same ones in my 05 Tacoma and was pleased with the upgrade for the $$$. The Focals are out of my snack bracket.

I just bought the Focal IS 690toy for the fronts......gonna try to score a descent deal on the rear doors later. Can’t wait till they get here!

I installed the Focal IS 690 Toy in the front this weekend and dynamatted the doors. Going to add the IC 165 to the rear doors this weekend. Also replaced the tailgate speakers with some Hertz 130.3 5.25" coax and I am impressed even without the rear doors done. They do need an amp get them to sing imo but even with the stock head unit they are huge improvement. Just not quite as loud.

Question, who felt that they still needed a sub once they installed an amp with these speakers? I can't decide if I want to go ahead with a 5 channel amp and sub or just get a 4 channel and be done with it.

I added a single sub to mine and was much happier with it than without it, although these speakers do a decent job with the bass. The sub really is just there for the very low frequencies. I found the mid-bass to be fine with the 690TOYs.

I did focals in all locations (the gate I used the non-toyota specific cheaper speakers). Also matted all doors and the tailgate. I found no need for a sub. But I did add a Fix-86 to flatten the signal and give me more control over the audio. While the bass was ample, the mid-bass was still missing and muddy. Would be truly happy if by some miracle Toyota would do a retro-update to add CarPlay to the 2018's.

Focal IS 690TOY

Has anyone used these as a factory upgrade for the non-JBL head unit? Is it worth the price? I was reading the thread about upgrading the dash speakers and was searching Sonic Electronix for prices and there was a comment there about a FJ owner who used these speakers. I looked up the numbers and found 2 different styles on crutchfield.

$299 Focal IS 690TOY - component speaker system with crossover, plugs that you disconnect from your Toyota's speakers plug right into your new Focal woofer and tweeter — no wiring cutting required.

$279 Focal IC 690TOY - 6"x9" 2-way speakers designed to fit select Toyotas.

That's alot of money for speakers so I wanted to check here to see if anyone has used them on their 5th Gen with the factory head unit and no digital processor or amp added.

I had them in my 2016 TE, no metter what people say I think this upgrade only good if you add amp, without amp it is not significant upgrade in sound quality I would say 1 out of 10. Installation was easy but sound quality just so so......

Heck, even my wife was amazed by the sound improvement when I had the Focals put in the dash and doors along with 36 sq.ft. of mat. She went from "oh they sound okay why spend money to replace them... to omg now I understand."

I agree with this comment. I installed these speakers a week ago in the driver and passenger doors along with some cheaper Hertz speakers in the liftgate. The improvement is significant. You will lose some volume because the factory head unit doesn't have enough juice to drive these at higher volumes. The factory head unit will bottom out and distort around 48 -50 on the volume dial. I am installing a JL Audio XD 700/5 with an Audio Control LC 7i to power everything and a small sub in a few weeks. The factory speakers are so weak and only rated for 20w. Everyone that road in the car thought the factory system sounded awful. My wife says it sounds a thousand times better now without an amp. You could certainly go with a cheaper amp but based on the footprint of the XD 700, ability power all speakers +sub, and the reviews I think it's worth it. I also added some sound deadening to the doors.

Make sure you read the detail on removing the door panel a few posts ago. It's an awesome tip and makes installation a breeze.

I'll go one step further. there is no need to lift the door panel up. Just get the bottom, and side clips to release and then pull the panel straight towards you. Comes right off. When re-installing it is easiest to align the bottom clips first and then work up. Everything snaps right in place. I can remove a panel in less than 1-2 minutes now.

If you search on www.ebay.ca (not .com) for IC165TOY, there's a German vendor who has them cheap with free shipping to Canada if you choose the correct listing for a random Toyota car model, as long as it says it is the IC165TOY.

My order was immediately shipped via UPS and it was only C$25 import fees. Not a tremendous deal, but cheaper than US$279 list for sure.

Yup.. The Italian vendors haven't listed it recently but the German vendor right now is a decent price (though higher than the Italians' lowest historical price) but has high shipping charge to US -- but not to Canada for some reason.

I ended up going with the LC7i to convert the head unit signal. Now I wish I had either replaced the head unit or gone with the FIX 86.

Did you add the volume control to the Fix 86? I would like to avoid that if possible but from my research you lose most of the correction if you are not at the volume level that you tune the DSP at.

I did not add the volume control, and I do not really see the need for it. Yes, the audio sounds best when volume is turned up about mid-way, but I thought of it this way, when I have the volume turned down, I am not concentrating on the intricacies of the track, when I am rocking out, it makes a big difference and sounds great.

The one thing it does mess with some is the navigation audio over songs. I have the voice-over at the lowest setting, and it still a little loud. Also took a couple tries to find the sweet spot to tune the Fix86 as it did some weird stuff with my phone. Sounded like it was discharging power through the speakers while on a phone call.

I see that you are supposed to tune it at 3/4 volume. I might back that down a little if I end up going with the Fix. 3/4 volume is way loud in my system. I very rarely get to that level.

I'm confused. You added the Fix 86, then said you wish you'd added the Fix 86?

I'm assuming it's just some sort of sound processor?

Not sure what happened with that reply but I only have the audio control lc7i which is just a line out converter.

I may replace it with the Fix 86 Digital sound processor.
