fog light wiring

I just picked up OEM fog lights for my 02. I also got the steering column setup but my var has VSC adn the car I got it from was a 99 without VSC. So needless to say I didn't want to put that part on for sake of a factory fog light switch on the stalk and forego my VSC.

soooo... I'm gonna have to get one of these


Question is, I have to splice the factory wiring harness to this switch. How do I do that? Anyone know of certain colored wires that are easily identifiable?

You could get a better looking switch for less or about the same price :p

Tbh, you could cut the Harness to use the plug from the 4runner, then wirte a harness to it.
 
Wow that's perfect, except...I don't read electrical language haha. I was hoping for lay terms like "splice blue to white and wire that to the on terminal of the switch". Something more like that.

I need to see the switch, or a diagram of it, in order to help to that degree. It's not difficult, but you should have some understanding of how it works.

My rudimentary understanding led me to think that...since it's hooked up to the factory harness, I'd just splice the harness under the steering column (whichever wires it is) and put that to the switch. That way, the battery is already wired in the proper sequence.

OR I can do things another way, whatever works. I've done audio wiring before so it can't be that hard. I just can't read those diagrams.

Well that is a horrible diagram, tells you how to wire the lights, but not the load, but that doesn't matter. That set up is designed to switch power, the Toyota setup is designed to switch ground. You could use that switch if you add a relay. Again, not very hard, but it helps if you have an idea what the goal is.

So basically you would need a 12V power source(Not available at the factory switch), preferably tapped in to the green/white wire going to the Fog Relay, and connect that to #2 on the switch. The rest of the switch is fairly easy.

#6 is instrument light power circuit
#7 and #8 are both going to ground.
#3 will go to the NEW Bosch type Relay that you add.

On the new Relay you add:

The wire from #3 on the switch will go to Term 85
term 86 will go to Ground
term 87 will go to Ground
term 30 will go to the wire going to the switch on the stalk, Black with Red stripe.
That will POWER the relay trigger when you turn on the switch, the relay will then ground the factory fog relay trigger sending 12V from the 15A Fog fuse to the Fog lights.

Easy peasy!

I should add, that switch looks like trouble. As in it is probably a worthless pile of steaming...stuff. Buy a quality switch, you'll thank me years from now.
 
ok so whether I go with Toyota OEM or this Carling swtich, the wiring instructions are above? And am I soldering this together or using the slip on connectors?

I don't solder connectors, but I use good Klein™ crimpers and I don't use insulated connectors. I take the plastic off and then use shrink tube.

Likewise. I solder splices, though. The forged Klein tool makes a big difference. Stamped crimpers are useless.
 
any pics of these mods if they're common?
"#6 is instrument light power circuit" doesn't fully compute for me. you use Klein crimpers, but what shape or style connector? I'm an electrical moron. but If I see what I need to do, I can do it easily. I just don't know the terminology or differences between needs.

Light power circuit= 12V that is activated by the instrument lights, so it dims and goes on/off with the lights on the dash.

No the numbers were for the switch YOU showed me. It could be the same on other switches, but the connections are not universal. The reason I suggested OTTRAW is because they have good documentation on the connections.
