Footwell LED Lights

Hello I'm looking to install LED lights in my 1996 4Runner that are connected to my dome lights and turn on when I open the door then turn off when closed. I do not know how to go about doing this and have done research and cannot find a guide to help me along. If you have any information that might help me I would love to hear it. Thanks! -Tanner

On my 2000 4runner, there is a LG-B (light green-black) wire down near the driver's footwell that goes to ground when any of the four doors are opened. Any light you tie to that ground will illuminate when any door except the rear hatch is opened.

I wanna do something like this but just haven't gotten into it. I'm not sure how'd I'd run all the LEDs and whatnot and I'd like to run it off of a switch as well so I could turn them off during the day.

On so here is the skinny on foot wells:

You can tie them into multiple places and they will all work.

For tying into the door switch (groundig switch) you will have to to into both sides and it will work but only when you open the doors. You can pull power from almost anywhere in your rig as LEDs don't pull much (stereo constant and dome). I pulled from my auxiliary fuse box. I used 4 SMD LEDs with a current draw of 20mA.

After looking at the dome light it seems that you could theoretically tie your ground to the hot wire as it will ground off at the dome light. The next time I dig into it I will be trying this method.

This is a fairly easy mod. I haven't figured out the rear lights yet. (Placement issues) but here are my front lights:

I did but I used a rearview mirror assembly from a 2nd gen 4runner because they have a door switch on the map lights. So you would need to have the smaller map light assembly to switch to the 2nd gen one. And then it's just one wire ran to the center dome light.

I went under and looked for the wire and had no luck. If anyone could help with location info of the wire that would be a great help. The wire color could be different because I have a 97.

The easy way is to just ask for the colored wires here on T4r. Or you could go buy a 12v circuit tester for $3 at any parts store or walmart and start testing the circuits for yourself. Drop the map light, pull the plug and test each wire until you get the one that suits your needs (on door open/off dorr closed). Then splice into it. The neg wire for you lights just gets grounded to any steel bolt near the light location.

These are great projects for nubes to get their feet wet and build confidence. You don't need any fancy equiptment like a multimeter which can be intimidating to most people.

If you are afraid of that location, simply use a door pin switch. One screw holds it in place in the door jamb. Tap into that wire and run the wire into the cabin. When the door opens, the circuit is connected and when it closes the circuit is opened (off).

Do you have to get a dome light type mount? Or just hook wire directly to led bulb?

if I did this, i'd have to replace the carpet because I'd be able to see how dirty it is. The budget keeps expanding

The best way for me was tying into the factory domelight in the headliner. That way everything works like normal. When you open the door, they come on, when you switch the domelight on, they come on (helps when you drop something)

I have a 99 and it was the wire mentioned as above but I verified by looking up the door trigger wire in a car alarm manual...many of them tie into the door trigger for obvious reasons...just google your model and your favorite car alarm and check the manual
