Well i learned a hard lesson yesterday. Started getttin that infamous U-joint clank and clunk. Figured it was pretty standard just replace the u-joints on my rear drive shaft.1-2 hours tops. Got all the old joints out and started re-installing the new joints i got from the local parts store. come to find out the ones i bought only fit the rear of the rear drive shaft. The double cardan set-up on the front of the rear driveshaft has a different sized joint. So i hit up toyota and they tell me that the double cardan portion of that driveshaft is a "non-servicable part" meaning you cant buy that part because it doesnt have a part number. They did however offer to get me a new rear driveshaft...for 1k plus shipping to AK. haha so anyway now im stuck internet shopping for a whole new rear drive shaft since the old u joints were a bit beaten on the way out of the shaft. Not sure if this info is already common knowledge and im just an idiot or what but i figured id share to hopefully prevent someone else from running into this issue....FML :roadkill:

yea man thats what im doing. Ive been to every auto parts shop in Juneau. Been cruisin the web all morning there is so far no existence of replacement u-joints in the double cardan set-up. I found a joint yesterday that was almost dead on the same but it was a 1/2 a millimeter off and when you drop it in the joint got so damn stiff you couldnt move it unless you had two people. And from all the other forums im reading its grease your joints and if one gets thrown anyway you just replace the shaft..... seems so stupid to me but im still lookin

There is a shop down the street that rebuilt my driveshaft and joints for $137.00. Toyota wasa going to charge $1000.00 for a new one. Looks like the front driveshaft is $380 and the rear is $1000.00. What did you end up doing?

Check around some truck repair shops in your area. I know a few around here can rebuild them.
If you have a place called FleetPride: Homepage in your area, I know they can usually rebuild them.
We have had a few shafts rebuild here at work. Close to 350-400 for price but beats a new one from Toyota.

Actually, it is pretty standard to lube all the zirc fittings and the problem goes away. I had the infamous "clank" when stopping at a stop sign for years (YEARS!) with no repercussions. Then after browsing T4R I read about this issue. I told my Toyota mechanic to lube all the zirc fittings on my next oil change and the problem went away completely. It hasn't occurred in 2 years.
I have owned this 4Runner since 2003.
