Quick question for the tacoma guys. I am looking into doing some swapping to pick up a fist gen taco. How good is the 2.7L? I know everyone and their mom wants a 3.4 i am looking at two trucks one has the 3.4 and one has the 2.7. So is the 2.7 just as reliable and all that? Thanks guys.

I have both now, 3.4 in my sons truck (my old driver), a 2002 Tacoma and my daily driver, 1996 T100 has the 2.7. The T100 has 240K, the Taco has 200K. IMO, I will take the 2.7 over the 3.4. Both are Mobil1 engines, both run great, but I just have a better gut feeling about the 2.7. The engine is strong, pulls great and cruises at 80 MPH without any issues. Neither consume oil.

I am looking to purchase another daily driver in a year, keep the T100 for around the house, and will more than likely get an Access Cab Tacoma with the 2.7, possibly the manual transmission.

They're both great motors, very reliable. 2.7 has a little less power, gets a little better fuel economy, has a timing chain instead of a belt. Easier to work on too, IMO.

My T100 is a single cab, base model, did not come with a bumper or radio from the factory, dad added later (he gave me the truck with 110K)

It is real light, so comparing the 130 HP to the heavier 190 HP Tacoma, the T100 has much better pickup, for lack of a better word.

I really belive in a side by side drag race, the T100 will easily out run the Tacoma and my 2105 TP. Like Kid said, the 2.7 is a timing chain engine, runs great.

As far as gas mileage, my drive to work is 35 miles one way, 90% interstate, I usually drive 72 to 74 MPH, and I will get 24.5 to 25.5 MPG.

Ihave so much faith in this truck, I just dropped $1200 in the truck on brakes all around, new rotors, new wheel bearings, calipers, shocks, transmission flush, oil change in the rear diff. I fully expect to get another 200K and then rebuild the engine. Next up will be all new ball joints and new exhaust. All of this for a truck with a NADA of $2400.

I have guys lined up at work waiting to buy it from me. Full size 8 foot bed, 4x8 plywood will lay flat. Will haul 30 bags of mulch without a problem.

I belive the running gear is Tundra quality, as this was the truck that lead to the then mid size truck for Toyota, the Tundra, before it got larger.

Sweet thanks for the input guys. Sounds like either way i cant go wrong. Im trading my 82 244 turbo volvo for my mother in laws 2000 Bmw 740il. I have to do a couple things to the bmw ie brakes tune up oil and a little body work at which time im going to try and trade it for either a 2nd or 3rd gen pickup with a lift or a real nice tacoma without a lift. If i find one with that would be a bonus. The bmw will be ready to start driving in a couple weeks and ready to trade hopefully a couple weeks after that unless something comes along before i do everything that i was going to do. Thanks again for the input.

side note - a lot of AE86 guys like the 2.7 and swap them into replace the 4AGE. lots of power and plenty of trq. I guess it holds up to constant high rpm and boost well enough.

THis is actually my 2nd one. I love it and am still kinda keeping it in the family. My brother in law isn't going to let it go any where so i still get to help build it i just dont have to pay for it. When i drive it i dont like it as much as my 4runner. so i want to get a nice truck.

Don't be worried the Volvo is now safe. My mother in law backed out so i decided that it's going to get built. I looking at buying a parts car for 200 right now and stripping it for doors engine trans and rearend. All i wanted was the ignitions control module turbo and maybe the engine. The guy said i can pull the engine for 300 or take the car for 200 so if i can convince the wife then im going to buy the parts car strip it and scrap it
