Hi, we're thinking of buying a black german shepherd for Christmas. We will be happy to hear any advice on raising these dogs.

Shepard’s are wonderful dogs! I have cared for a two ex-avalanche dogs directly and have been around many more. First things first they require a lot of care and attention. They are a working dog, meaning they prefer to be with their humans than without. They need regular exercise, a least two mile walks daily. Training, they are smart and require mental stimulation, like most working dogs, they want to please. They are not a long lived dog, ten years on average, due to the long spine are also prone to hip and back issues as they age. Know if you are getting one you are getting a companion and not just a pet, if you want a pet get a Pomeranian :

If you are asking advice on how to raise any dog, this tells me that this is probably your first. The best advice anyone can give is do more research! Asking is a great start. There are websites out there that can you fill out a questionnaire and it will guide to the type of dog that best suits you and your lifestyle. The best thing you can do is get a dog and give it the care and love it needs for its entire life. The worst is developing a bond and putting it up for adoption. If you’re going in go all in

As you can tell from my "likes", I like sporting breeds, mostly pointers and especially GSPs (We've had 5 or 6 over the years=all but one were pound puppies.)

This is Faith, our current 3 yr old pointing Griffon. She also is a pound puppy (She may have some wirehaired pointer in her)

She LOVES to ride in the 4Runner but likes the front seat (she sets off the seat belt alarm, though)=Pretty good about riding in the back seat, if I insist! ;-)

Our GSP is geriatric and can't get in but would if she could!

Samus is turning 7 this year, which means she's more than middle aged. Despite being active, she's put on some weight these last 2 years (weighs 100lbs.). She still manages jumping up into the cargo, but it's tough and once in a while she doesn't make it on the first try. Plus, I'm also planning on lifting soon, which would add 1" in the rear. I'm going to buy those collapsible dog steps and hope they can hold her weight because we take her everywhere, and she isn't getting any younger. Any recommendations? I wish I could still lift her up like I used to.

I'm a little late to this post but I also have a golden. She's 11, I had to buy her stairs to get into the back seat. Just a cheap set from Wal-Mart but I put sticky treads on it from the dollar store. Also got a used ramp but originally bought from Costco. She does fine with both. Ramp gets her in the back of SUVs. Hope your pup handled the lift ok.

Here she is from a few weeks ago. White old-lady face, and a goofy smile. It's so hard to lose these family members.

I am sorry for your loss; I lost my 13yr old lab to cancer in March of this year. My wife and I have since rescued two labs, but nothing will ever replace our first. It's hard losing a big part of the family.

I lost my Yellow 5 years ago. I now have 2 re-homed Blacks. I will always remember my Angle.

The dog hauler

This is my 4 year old Weimaraner. Perfect partner for long days on the mountain bike. He travels in the back in a Variocage XL.

We are about to get one, we want one who will ride with us and do outdoor stuff! What kind of dogs do you guys have? Pics are welcome!

My male is a Catahoula Bulldog and my female who I got from my cousin so she didn’t have to go to a shelter is an American Pit Bull Terrier Catahoula Leopard dog mix. Both great dogs!
