2011 4-Runner & Lexus GX460
While not a scientific study, I own a 2011 4-Runner and another family member owns a lexus GX460. The gas mileage for them on the same trips is almost identical based on manual calculations and the 460 is substantially heavier. So the gas milage is basically a none issue. I know if Toyota offer the V8 in the 4-Runner they will have at least one more sale, because the V8 is so much smoothers, quieter, and gets basically the same milage albeit on high test gas. There is a real possibility that the V8 with 6spd would get better milage in the lighter 4-Runner vehicle, which could hurt Toyota's higher profit margens in the Lexus GX460. So the driver may really be profit rather then more green powerful vehicles that some of their customer base wants.
