Got a letter in the mail from the toyota dealer that sold me my car. they say they need inventory. Have any of you guys had any luck with these kinda things?

they need to get you in there to sell you new vehicle, oldest dealers trick.
another one to get your keys for evaluating your trade and hold them, hoping to sell you new car.

I didn't even buy mine at the dealer and I get a letter every few months from them. I got curious and gave them a call one time and just laughed at the guy cause the offer was ridiculous. I don't remember specifics, but it was nowhere close to being worth it. I just toss em in the trash now.
Yes I got a letter too for my VW golf and 4runner so it's not just toyota doing this. Apparently used cars are demand for two main reasons. first, back in 2008 there was a big downturn in the economy so not too many cars were leased out. As a result, not too many lease returns for 2012 (4 year lease term), so they are short on lease returns to sell. Second reason, the economy today is still not stableso people who are looking to buy are looking at used and more affordable cars.

It's just a tactic they use to get you on the lot to try to trade in your truck for something new. Dealerships have been doing it forever.
I started getting those letters within 2 years after I bought my 4runner.
If the 4runner was so poorly made that I'd need a new one after only 2 years...then why the heck would I buy another one???
Obviously that's NOT the case. Dealerships will make a lot more money if you buy a new vehicle every 4 years instead of every 8-10 years like I do.

I've been getting similar letters from both my Honda and Toyota dealer (both Conicelli of Conshohocken, PA). Thing is, they couple this with a "sweepstakes" to give-away a new car. You have to go to the dealer to redeem a code that is printed on the letter that comes to you via mail. No obligation and you are offered a $10 gift certificate for Target every time. Over the past few years, I've gotten more than $100 worth of cards. In the letters, they promise of giving you over blue book value and a lower car payment than that of your current one. Funny.
I agree it's partly a marketing scam but at the same time it is true that they are short on used cars because of the reasons mentioned before.
From what I understand and they make a lot more money selling used cars than new cars.

I get that kind of letter on a regular basis. My '03 4Runner has about 115,000 miles and they'd sell it to wholesaler in a heartbeat if I traded it in -- it would never be sold off their lot. They just want to sell me a new car.

Maybe your 4Runner is special. Did Price own it before you bought it?
I get these on my 8 model year 4runner and got them on my 8 year old VW. BS the have a sudden need for old high mileage vehicles. The won't even sell them on the lot. They try to make you believe for some reason your vehicle is special, but they tell everyone their vehicle is special.
I believe it's a scam and an outright lie. Not just marketing, it's a lie and it ticks me off. It is dishonest because what they are saying is not true- there is no special demand for my particular vehicle. The scum that writes or approves these to be sent out should be ashamed. I can't believe legitimate dealers do this. :rant:
