For you so called engineers out there

Not a great way to start out or get help in the future if you plan to stick around.... It doesn't take reading the posts of the members with an engineering background to verify they're the real thing and contribute a lot of that knowledge to the forum.

This is by far the friendliest forum I've been/am a member of, and the responses thus far prove that, some sites are vicious...

Let me tell you why your question is un-answerable (and if anyone does they are full of it) in it's current form:

Example: I build a tower 20 ft high on top of my 4Runner and stick 1,500 lbs of gear and a tent up there and expect to drive around without tipping over. or,
I build a sling under my 4Runner and load 1,500 lbs of gear in there. Which is better? Which is safer?

Your CORRECT question would be "Calling all nice engineers: Could you please calculate the expected safe loading capacity of a 20XX 4Runner with A, B and C mods? Also include the safety factor if it's not too much trouble and also the change in CG and the relationship to lift?" Thank you guys ever so much!

Ummmmm, calling all nice engineers: Could you please calculate the expected safe loading capacity of a 2011 LE 4Runner with the following-

Bilstein 5100s all around with 665llb Eibach springs and adjustable collars set with 97mm thread showing on driver's side and 76mm on passenger side. The coils are black instead of red. I think the powder coating has a 2oz variable between the colors. I went with black because of the 2oz savings.

Light Racing UCAs with the newer graphite bushings and only 2 large washers. Not the original 4 large washers or the 2 large and 2 small washer variety.

Rear springs are from Toytec and are rated at 25% increase over the stock spring rate and capacity. I apologize for not collecting the data from OE.

The current mileage on the suspension is 42764. Please take that into consideration.

Additional loads carried:
Shrockworks full skid package (engine, trans, crossmember, fuel tank)

ARB bull bar with Warn VR8000s

There are 8 Rigid Industries Duallys on the bumper. They are mounted 14mm away from the leading edge of the bumper. I know that the location of these will directly affect the leverage they will have on the bumper and the suspension. There are 2 clear diffused, 4 clear spot, and 2 amber spot. Please take into consideration the weight of the diffused lenses as I believe they are slightly thicker because of the additional material used to create the diffused lens.

There are also 2 Rigid Industries 6" amber driving located near the leading edge of the bumper. These are 4mm from the front.

I am running a standard aluminum hawse fairlead from Warn but I did powder coat it black with a red accent on the warn logo. This will add additional weight, I'm sure. There is also a Factor 55 Prolink on the front. Again, in black because I believe the black powder is lighter than the colored ones.

I'm running wheels from KMC called "Skitch" in a 18x8 with +18mm offset. There are spidertrax wheel spacers as well. Unfortunately, they are blue so they weigh different than most of the other black ones available. Tires are from Nitto and they are the Trail Grappler design in a 285/65R18 load e. I run them at 40psi for a majority of the time.

I have a Gobi rack that was custom made with no vertical support bars in the front and no cross bars. I have removed the front one originally. There is a full floor in expanded metal and a sun roof insert. Attached is a Rigid Industries 40" E series light bar. Clear with combo optics. Gobi ladder. There are also 2 Rigid Industries 6" floods on the back of the Gobi. They are mounted with aluminum brackets from AXIA. I don't have the current specifications of weight from them yet. I've left several messages with their tech dept. They don't seem to want to call me back.

I have removed the rear "4RUNNER" logo and replaced it with the original logo from a 1993 HILUX surf.

I almost forgot, there are bixenon projectors in the front headlamp housings now. So please take the additional weight into consideration (ballasts, wiring and all).

My truck also has third row. I mainly run with them down so the center of gravity is lower.

Metal Tech OPOR sliders with partial step plate with dimple die. Since these were designed for the 2010-13 LE and SR5s, they are 65mm lower than the standard. This should affect my CoG as well.

Windows are tinted and again, I don't have the weight classification of the tint.

I'm 6'0 236.2 lbs. That's with a most current hair cut. I generally keep my nails trimmed so the weight shouldn't be a factor.

Thank you so much for your time mr. nice 1engineer. I look forward to your calculations.

Darn, darn, darny, darn....last note. I'm using the factory carpeted mats. I believe they are slightly lighter than the Weathertech/Husky variety. Sorry about that. That could have completely made your calculation useless. Much like this thread.

Damn there sure are some ruffled feathers in here!
Why is everyone taking the question so personal? For being such "helpful and friendly" folks there sure are a lot of rude and condescending comments directed at a simple question.

I'm not an engineer, but I get around the back roads of the Rockies quite a bit. I typically travel with around 2-500 pounds of gear and can't really tell it's there besides some light rattling from the kitchen box. Granted I load it in the rear cargo bay as securely as possible.
So to answer your question I have traveled passes such as Imogene with 500 pounds of gear in the truck with no noted issues or concerns.

Disclaimer: I don't have any lab data or math equations to back this up. Just real world analysis.

After doing a careful and thorough analysis, and based on your extremely detailed equipment list (thanks for that) I have taken the 3rd derivitive, divided by 2, subracted the number you started with and came up with the solution:

17.5 inches. You are welcome.

bwahahahaha....so will my tires rub or not?!

Does not compute. Please define the variable "safe".

The engineers around here get a bit snarky when such questions get asked, especially when there is a detailed sticker and the information is published by Toyota. Now if asking about that information factoring other things such as lift or new bumpers etc. i suspect they would have offered real answers. I think the OP's thread title is what drew the rebuke though, if one were an engineer they might view that in a condescending way. But what do I know, I'm no engineer.

What's the over/under on the age of guys who know this is a reference to a book title?

OOH! OOH! The one with the Martians and Venutians in it!!!??? And I think the moon was made of quiche! Or was that the stuff the Martians wouldn't eat? :peep: :moon: :dizzy:

Engineer, I really hate to pick on your work, I really do. But I believe you made a gross miscalculation. OP never specified whether it was an African swallow or European that may, or may not, ride or fly above his vehicle. Also, whether it is laden or unladen. The changes in airspeed velocity will have a drastic and damning effect on your calculations.

Please forgive me for the correction, "so-called" Engineer, but I couldn't let this misinformation go unchallenged. I wouldn't want the OP to overload his truck, tip over, and return blaming you.

And yes, Ducmonsta, if the swallow is both European and laden, your tires will rub.

Please show your math work and provide a spread sheet.

You have two cows. You sell three of them to your publicly listed company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows are transferred via an intermediary to a Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority shareholder who sells the rights to all seven cows back to your listed company. The annual report says the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more. You sell one cow to buy a new president of the United States, leaving you with nine cows. No balance sheet provided with the release. The public then buys your bull.

Can you tell I work in finance? I analyze this junk while all the engineers make sure my toys don't break when used properly. Their job is far more important.
