Fort Myers, FL area assistance needed

Drove 1200 miles from NY to Sanibel Island FL with wife for weeks vacation.
Issues last 150 or so miles, engine stumbles when lifting off gas on highway and at idle when in gear….almost stalling but hasn’t yet, kept in neutral raising idle when waiting for light.
No tools with me, staying in resort area so limited access to just about anything.
All fluids good. Oil & trans clean, Toyota red coolant not running hot.
New plugs & NGK wires 20K ago when I did VCG. Cleaned throttle body & MAF at that time as well.
Had 1/4 tank so filled up with premium 93 octane, hoping some improvement.
Hope to find local shop tomorrow to check for any codes, no CEL illuminated.
Any thoughts or local shop recommendations appreciated.
Heading back to NY day prior to Xmas, hoping to avoid getting stuck on I-95 during holiday traffic…….with wife in car!

Sounds like the the IAC sensor. Was that gone through when you did the throttle body cleaning?

Unfortunately I don’t think the IAC is serviceable on 01-02 models as it’s part of the throttle body assembly but correct me if I’m wrong.
This is becoming a major problem for me if it’s the IAC.

I think you’re confusing the IAC with the throttle position sensor. Toyota lists the throttle position sensor for 01-02 as not serviceable.

Unless I’ve got wrong part number it shows not a fit for 02 model year.
I think they made change in design for 01-02 models.
Please tell me I’m wrong as can’t imagine having to try and drive back home 1200 miles with a bad IAC and irregular idle in traffic and on highway.

Just off the phone with parts department Conicelli Toyota.
Confirmed 02 AIC is only serviceable by replacing entire throttle body assembly, part #2203062020.
Assuming that is my problem I need to track one down locally here in Ft Myers's area and find shop to replace as I have zero tools with me.
Anybody have shop recommendation and or dealer recommendation on this area?

Looks like I can have new throttle body assy and gasket shipped directly to Naples Toyota and have them complete install on Wednesday.
Not terrible as install is straight forward so hopefully it goes smoothly.
Hopefully diagnosis is correct, sure seems to be classic symptoms of bad IAC so should be good to go.
Fingers crossed, will post results.

None available locally and naturally I forgot to pack mine when I hit the road.
Of course I packed: replacement belts, alternator brushes, starter rebuild kit……
Forgot my Bluetooth reader and only packed a few hand tools….go figure!

You didn't just fill your gas tank right before this happened? As maybe you got a tank of bad gas. [Probably not but just a thought]

That was thought as I mentioned in initial post but after refilling with 93 octane still seems to be happening.

Hmmm I thought it was just the throttle position sensor that wasn’t serviceable. I’d want to take it somewhere to make sure before spending all that money on a new throttle body

Yeah apparently they made some design changes to prevent people from messing with the throttle body assembly as emissions got tighter.
I’m fairly certain I’m dealing with a bad IAC but it is possible as Brillo suggested some bad gas.
Given vacation location I’m really stuck between rock and hard place.
Worst case scenario I just wasted $511 on new throttle body assembly w/gasket. It’s worth it if I don’t get stuck on interstate with wife and kids during a 20 hour drive back home.
At 200K miles it’s not end of the world. Hate paying someone else to work on my ride as we all know they just don’t show the love that we do on our own vehicle.

It's a same your not near Pittsburgh PA as I grabbed spare throttle body off an 02 sport at the local junk yard. We could have thrown on for testing...

That thought is much appreciated!
One of those situations where just have to bite the bullet. Getting back home for the holidays is number one priority.
This truck has been good to me so I’ll show it some love and treat it to a new throttle body and move forward.

Quick update:
Was able to borrow Scangauge 2, no active or pending codes.
What exactly does this tell me regarding possibility of having a bad IAC or anything involving the throttle body? Does this totally eliminate the possibility of a bad IAC?
Would this move the needle more to a bad tank of gas?
As already mentioned, I have a new factory fresh throttle body & gasket which includes a new IAC and TPS ($500) being delivered to area Toyota dealer on Wednesday morning.
They will install for $225 - $250.
Here’s the kicker, I can’t leave any room for doubt as cannot afford to get stuck and have any issues on trip back home, 1200 miles/20hrs….wife & kids in car with holiday traffic on I-95.
Thoughts?

What happens if you put injector cleaner or a fuel treatment in the fuel?. My thinking is that's fairly cheap and if it changes what the engine is doing you know it's just bad fuel.

I would imagine that you have pending or codes if it were injectors.

Does it only act up on idle? Or is it running like crap just driving around.

Sadly, there is no easy way to tell the fuel pressure at the injector rail to eliminate the pump, filter from being the cause..

We think alike, trying to find a fuel additive to throw in the tank. Tough to find much of anything auto related where I’m at.
Fresh tank of gas seems to have made a difference. Need to get some highway driving and see what happens on deceleration as that was most obvious issue.

No clue if there might be Other differences between my '99 and your '02, but my bad IAC did not show anything on any code reader, including TechStream.

But the thing is, the IAC is an *idle* air control. Mine had Zero impact while driving, only while off-throttle at stops (where the idle was all over the place with occasional stalls when it was Really hot). Driving down the highway showed zero issue.

As for the Rest of the TB, couldn't tell you. In replaced the whole (after several IAC cleanings) unit as it's my wifes DD and I wasn't in the mood to deal with her should the 4R act up/stall. The money hurts, but not as much as having issues while making that monster drive home. I don't envy your situation... wish I could offer support here in GA, but I'm over on I85.
