Hard to say....I wouldn't be surprised if they are getting asking or close to it...but I can't say for sure. Unfortunately, a lot of human nature tends to hide our losses....so it's hard to say if those folks are being completely honest about how they did. Me, I SUCK at negotiation...though I've gotten a little better in recent years. I tend to overpay for a lot of things and fool myself into thinking I got a good deal if I searched the internet looking for the lowest price and then waiting for a 10% off coupon or searching for a coupon code, LOL....at least I'm not paying full retail, is my justification.

Regardless, you can't save people from themselves. And I'm not looking down my nose at anyone for buying what they want, merely identifying the underlying problem with inflated prices...and that's the consumer's willingness to pay it coupled with low interest rates and fast and loose credit lending (though in the case of older used cars, that doesn't come into play).

I'm no one to talk anyway....I paid $32K for our 4Runner when we bought it new. Talk about overpaying, LOL. I will say it's been one of, if not the most reliable vehicles we've ever owned.

We all spend money on frivolous stuff....1st world problems, right? Regardless, it's none of my business how anyone spends their money...as long as they are happy with the purchase, that's all that matters.

Unfortunately, it's nothing one person can change.

Going to look at the 4runner today. KBB value in good condition is about $5,500 and very good is about $6,000. I am going to ask $6,000 for it as it has a great service history and big things like LBJ and Timing belts have been replaced. His ad said OBO so I will negotiate. SO, that being said, do any of y'all have any good tips on negotiation?

Again, I suck at it....but I'd recommend printing out both NADA and KBB and bringing it to show the owner. You may want to hold onto these print outs until initial negotiation starts and you can show him why you feel your counter offer has merit.

What I don't recommend is insulting him with an incredibly low ball offer at the outset in hopes of "meeting in the middle".

Establish rapport first and foremost....it's easier to negotiate with someone if they respect/like you. Remember, the best negotiation leaves both parties feeling like they left a little on the table. Go back and forth. Start with a bid you don't think he'll take, but isn't a slap in the face and waste of his time. Time is a valuable commodity. Be respectful of that. If/when he counters, don't be afraid to counter again. Typical negotiation is about half way between where you started. If you said $5500 and he said that's way too low....ask what can he come down to? Let's say his reply is $7K is as low as he could go....then pull out the NADA/KBB paperwork and explain why you think $7K is too high and that you could go up to $6K.

Just an example....you'll have to feel him out as you go. The biggest thing is don't be afraid to be told, "No". This isn't the only 4Runner in the world. No matter how nice this one is, you can find another so don't fall in love with it unless you want to end up paying too much.

Found this '01 Sport SR5 in Fort Worth for $4500, and only 147k on the clock. It's not a Limited, but it's still 4X4 and has a Sport hood! 2000 Toyota 4Runner 4X4

Also ran across this this '01 Sport SR5 in Dallas for $8000. It's not 4X4 but it has a supercharger. His mileage isn't listed, but he says he has maintained it and has proof. Still high for a supercharger with only 4X2.

I paid slightly lower than what he was asking for it, but it's a pretty stout vehicle!

Looks like a decent 4runner. Might be a little high. If you got it for 6,000, you'd be doing GREAT!
However, I remember when I was looking, I never thought I would find something good under 10k.

Funny.. I may have seen that 4runner driving around. I know I've seen one just like it several times. I'm in the Richardson area, and I don't recall seeing too many of the two-tone paint schemes like that...


And I see two or three black sport editions just like mine in my immediate area...

***UPDATE**** So I bought the truck. Everything was in working order and looked good. There a good amount of scratches and dents but that is fine. The 4runner was meticulously maintained. He has paperwork on everything. LBJ, timing belt, etc all serviced at the right time. This 4runner has been serviced at the same dealership it was bought at in 2001. The owner personally knows the original owner also. And get this, the current owner is a mechanic by trade so this 4runner is in outstanding mechanical condition. The only issues are cosmetic. This will probably be a 400K mile 4runner. We shook on $6900 which sure is a little high but this one is worth it because of it's history. I pick her up tomorrow after the owner takes his aftermarket sub out of it.

Congrats 4flyer - you negotiated 8% off, asking price / good chunk of savings.

There is a reason, TX vehicles hold their value / simply from a lack of rust.

And their is a lot to be said, from a vehicle maintained by some mechanic owners.
- I have a few friends, that are John Deere & Ski-Doo mechanics
- I bought a garden tractor off one and might buy a future sled from the other
- had the GT262 riding mower for several years now / and its never fails me

I'm from rust belt Ontario, Canada and rust free/original paint 15 year old vehicles, are rare here.
- when you find the good ones, without frame & body panel rust / sometimes you got to stretch the budget

I paid $9,000 Cdn. for my one owner/dealer serviced/garage kept 2000 SR5 4x4, with 80,400 miles.
- I thought the price was a bargain & non-negotiable
- it sat at dealer friends lot, for safety check work & e-test, for over a month / repaired as a fill in job
- he could of sold my 4Runner, each & every week / for even more $$ / I just happened to buy it, the first day it arrived

Good deal for what you got. Anything under 7k for what you are describing is a win.

2001 Toyota 4runner Limited AWD

Price does not seem too bad for Dallas. I can probably talk it down. Looks fine other than that. Supposedly 2nd owner with all maintence records. I've been screwed on CL deals before so I am apprehensive. Thoughts? Advice?

I bought an 01 SR5 4wd in mint condition in Dallas about 6 months ago from a dealership for $6,500 with 2 previous owners.
