Frame care

So in 2012 I purchased my 99 runner, and have been doing minor things here and there.
That summer I got under the rig and decided to take care of some minor rust damage, mainly on the transmission crossbar and a little on the rear axle.

Just this last week I was at the coin up wash and decided to stick the nozzle in some of the holes:whoo: yeah, yeah! When I did so I noticed the water pouring out of various points on the frame to be brown and just plain dirty.

Question is what's the easiest way to inspect the condition of the frame on the inside ? Eventually I am going to spray some type of paint or rust inhibitor in their but first I want to make sure it is clean enough to actually make a difference.

What's the opinion of the t4r.org community?

Don't put paint inside the frame. You're better off spraying some type of wax like Fluidfilm.

Because paint doesn't stop rust, it covers it.

Well yea, good point and so the wax would keep oxygen from reaching the rust if any. But I'm not entirely convinced there is a problem inside them. I guess with dirt sitting in the rails it would hold water more and cause rust. Any suggestions on how to inspect the inside of the rails? I'm just wanting to prevent or deture rust from getting worse.

I live in Oregon and so no salt to worry about, but my rig did come from Utah and not sure about what they might use for ice control.

There's a product from Eastwood that is supposed to neutralize rust inside the frame and then seal it. I have not used it but there could be some promise there.

I think I used 3 cans (I posted my process somewhere on here). It's hard to know if it worked or not... the stuff is pretty toxic. I feel better about my frame now.

Search for it on ebay for a better deal.

Eastwood!! Thank you, I new I had read something about that product just could not remember the name.

I don't mind the product being toxic just the right PPE and I only need to do it once, I hope!

I'm sure I will never have to worry about rust being as bad as the guys in the rust belt but I would rather take the proper precautions now then to have a huge headache later.

I repaired rust at the trans crossmember this fall.

Looking inside their before the repair wherever they welded to the frame there will be rust on the inside if your in the rust belt.

Holy crossmember!!

That's just plain sad man, I feel for you!
I have and will never have that problem thank the 4runner gods for that.
But jeeze, I wonder at what point the structural integrity is compromised?

I'm fairly certain if I ever live over in the belt that I would just lease a vehicle and only drive my runner in the summer!
That is if I had the money.

Serious though, did you actually repair that, or just counting your losses and moving on?

I get my rust proofing inspected & touched up or resprayed twice a year with that waxy stuff (Sym-tec in Canada).
Dealer charges me $35 each time. Cheap insurance.

Too inspect the inside of your frame, you could use something like a Dewalt dct410b inspection cam or any plumbing cam.
