Frame Condition from Factory

Has anyone noticed small patches of frame that appear to have missed being coated/painted? It is mostly along welds. For reference, the truck has 700 miles on it. I bought it new a few weeks ago.

I went to spray down the frame with CRC Corrosion Inhibitor, and was pretty surprised to see spots like the following:

Does anyone know if that's normal? Would you be concerned?

Looks like Toyota hired the same drunk FCA MFers that did the welds on the new Wranglers.

That's a real sloppy weld and slag, but if you take it in you'll be told it's "to spec" since everything seems to be holding together.

All that surface rust is nothing to worry about, but looks like ass compared to the welds on my 2013... which have survived six and a half CO winters and salt.
 
I noticed a handful of these small rust spots along the frame on my 17 Pro.

Any one w/ advice on how to DIY treat these spots, et al so they don't get worse? Or is this something best left to an undercarriage coating specialist?

Use a wire brush to remove what you can, and spray over it with rust inhibiting paint or fluid film.
 
I had those weld rust spots almost since day one on my 2018 ORP when I got it over 2 years ago. Whenever I’m under the truck doing any maintenance and see one I brush it off with a wire brush, then clean it up with a toothbrush and solvent like Coleman fuel, then isopropyl alcohol, then spray it with black enamel. I supposed you could use some spray rust reformer, but this works for me in a mild climate and no road salt. Over time you’ll get scrapes and rock dings that expose bare metal, and rust will form. Just touch them up whenever you see it.

I'm also glad I thought to spray on the CRC Rust Inhibitor right away. Hoping that'll last a good while, and won't be a 2x yearly maintenance item like I was dealing with using Fluid Film (still great stuff, though!).
 
Keep that picture or take another that shows a lot more of your frame because living in the Midwest it will be the last time it looks that good, unfortunately!

When I look at for sale rigs from California and frame pictures are included I can only drool at 10-12-15 year old frames that have virtually zero rust!

Lol, right? I’m going to do everything I can to keep it in shape. But I know it’ll eventually succumb to the Midwest winters :/
 
The welding process drives carbon, silicone, etc. to the surface of the weld. Paint, e-coat, etc. does not stick very well on those materials. Those small spots where the paint is missing is normal and you will see that on almost any vehicle. Even where the paint is still covering, the adhesion may not be all that great.

Also, there were no drunk welders welding on your vehicle.:D It's all done by robots short of an occasional repair weld. For frame welds, yours look fine. They are on seam and seem to have good penetration. The previously mentioned FCA weld fiasco was due to poor fixturing/robotic weld programming and an overall lack of quality control. This was the kind of crap several JL owners had to put up with. Welds with no penetration and almost completely missing the target.

Oh wow, that’s scary on the JLs!

But that’s good to know about the welds being fine! And interesting as to why it happens...had no idea!
