Dude! Where did you get that extractor holding device?! That thing looks like a mid-evil torture device. I bet that was imported from a 3rd reich junk yard.

I use square sockets on that kind of extractor, but I've broken a few(square corners are not strong) and have resorted to hammering on a nut which I can then use a standard socket on.

I do like your finger press device though.

It's a cheapo tap wrench. I've had it for years and years but I think it came from Sears.

[EDIT}Found it, it's good old Vermont-American so probaly the hardware store back in the 70s--back before they invented Home Depot..

Spend the $12 and get one. It works well on the small ones. I have others for bigger squares.


Tap wrench is best for this, I'd say, as the extractors are all different sizes and it is easier to push down and turn at the same time with two hands. So you have a set of square sockets? Cool....I want one of those.

Yeah, now that I think of it I probably had one of those tap wrenches, at one time. Not as cool looking as yours though. I guess I never though of using it because the broken bolts always seem to be in an inaccessible location!

The sockets are actually double square, some call it 8 point. Like this...

Got that part right. I could only turn 90° at a time because of the LCA bracket. I would have switched to a socket after I broke it loose if I had one. I actually went to a vertical Vise-Grip after two or three 90°s.

Even with a nice employee discount, Snap-ons are pretty spendy.

Those same bolts were broken on both my trucks. I did the same thing you did but used some heat and they came out easily. Use some anti-seize when you reinstall the bolts. One question. Are you able to see the inside of the frame in those suspect areas forward of the lower rear control arm mounts? That frame looks good but knowing what the condition of the frame in that area is the ultimate synopsis of the frame condition. I know I would want to know. Plus if you use the Eastwood frame coating on that area and it's "crusty" it won't do any good. I suspect you'll be fine though. Looking forward to seeing the completion of this.

What I can see through the holes is smooth and green (due to the Eastwood). I'd say it's good.

Thanks for the tip on Anti-Seize. I never would have thought of that....(Every bolt and stud I have touched in 17 years on this rig has been Anti-Seized unless it has Lock-Tite...except lug nuts. I leave those dry.) Need I point out that MY skidplate came off easily?

I had the torch ready but usually not needed for a M8 weld-nut like this in my experience.

Took Labor Day off. Today did the degrease and acid prep steps. Letting it dry overnight and tomorrow is POR15 day. Choosing my wardrobe tonight.

Nothing really picworthy in these steps. I'll just say the POR15 spray bottles suck and the degreaser managed to kill my garden sprayer and the acid killed my my ZEP "Professional" bottle sprayer. Each time I had to finish with the POR15 bottle. Have back-up spray systems if you do this. It would suck to get halfway through and then not be able to finish. I used about two-thirds of a quart of degreaser, before dilution, and maybe a guart and a half of acid prep.

The issue with the garden sprayer may not have been the fluid. The pickup tube split at the top and started letting in air. I had felt an issue coming before this job so I won't blame the degreaser for the problem. It's working again now, with a slightly shorter pickup tube.

OK, for you and others ( [MENTION=99565]kolelt[/MENTION] ) with the problem, and anyone that wants a preview of the DIY that will come, and for my future use, I created a public album with all the pics. Some pics I will use to put it all back together and some that show the drama of squeezing the old frame out from underneath the body. Tighter than frog *****.

You won't get them in context to my posts but at least you can see them. Eventually I may put them in order with captions.

Yeah. Once the frame is ready. That's the only really worrisome spot, but I'll do something over the whole underbody.

POR15 done. Top coat tomorrow. Used exactly all of the one quart can. I had a pint in reserve or I might have been nervous towards the end. I tried foam brushes and they worked well at flat surfaces, but they got torn to pieces on the rough welds and the edges of brackets. So I went with the good old brush. As in one that had been used already with latex wall paint and was ready to die, as I ain't gonna try and clean a brush with this stuff on it. I found lacquer thinner worked just fine to clean any that got on me, and I emerged from the ordeal unscathed--at least anywhere I can see.

As I painted the top, I used two logs at one end and the Olds jack at the other so I could paint underneath the ends on the jack end. Then I put the logs back and did the same at the other end. Then I put it with logs at all four corners when I got underneath to paint the bottom (which is actually the top, since it's flipped.) It's VERY stable on four logs.

Hey, there are five 6-ton jacks and a 2-ton crane all holding up the vehicle. But those logs have a larger base than the jack stands so I wouldn't hesitate to do it. Those are North American ash, very dense and very heavy.

Logs. You're using logs to support the frame. Not jacks, not a lift, not a fancy frame spinning rig. Logs! Ash logs! Ash logs that I've no doubt you cut yourself on your own property.
